tough draw for the kid, but the most likely loser's side matches are favourable

Good grief! First, Sam Henderson draws the 2024 World Pool Champion (WPC) Fedor at the 2025 WPC, and here in Florida, he draws the 2025 WPC. I know how much time and energy his family puts into his career, and he's doing everything he's supposed to be doing to advance and rise to the top. Hard to do so when you get these draws, two in a row.

And Earl Strickland and Andy Goldstein? Seems like a match made for TV.

Did anybody witness the draw?

softish field for a major (there is a 10b conflict iirc), so i'm calling a surprise-ish winner. mario, kledio or hoang wins this
Seventeen of the top 20 players in the WNT rankings are in the event. And 31 of the top 40. Not sure I'd call it soft.

The most notable players missing are Filler, the Ko brothers, and a few Poles such as Maciol and Szewczyk.

The middle part of the player roster does seem somewhat softer, though.

Foreign attendance at American pool events will be soft for the near future due to our present government policies. Why would a garden variety 750-770 player bother and risk getting detained or harassed at the border or have their cell phone impounded and searched?

Tourism to the U.S. is down overall, but pool players don't appear to be affected much.

The Florida Open has 104 Americans and 152 foreign players. Not much different from the 2024 US Open, which had 89 American players.

There's also a sizable contingent of Pinoys in Orlando. They are often the ones with Visa problems traveling to the U.S. or Europe.

Roster for the 2025 US Open also looks like it will field a similar number of foreign players as it did last year.

We love slamming the Arabian peninsula tournaments for their local dead money but the American events might be even worse!

I saw Matchroom's social media had some players running a 5k yesterday. Welcome to Florida in August boys! Don't bother with sunglasses 'cause they fog up anyway once you step outside.

Plenty of dead money, sure. In any case:

Among the 60 players ranked 41 to 100, all but three are slated to play in Florida (not including no-shows).

Of those 60 players, 53 are foreigners and seven are American.

The only three foreign players ranked from 41-100 who are not in Florida are Grabe, Maciol and Lo Ho Sum.

Better turnout than I thought.

and there are 3 or 4 trinidadians. trinidadans. whatever. i know this because i had to google the flag lol

the 256 fields have their charm, and i like that more players get the chance, but it can be rough watching the first two days

Nah. Watching dead money players miss, players way better than I, in a big tournament helps take some of the sting out of my own misses. 😁
