explain the NOLA exemption?
Nothing like the rest of The South.
There are some classic Southern traditions present, but the culture is much more influenced by the French and the Spanish. Architecture is very different.
My grandmother was born and raised in New Orleans. When we would go back to visit, as a child I was briefed in the car on the way over as to how I should behave differently in certain situations. Mother also explained how certain things were done differently there, and other things had different names. Both my mother and grandmother were fluent in French.
Deep.
New Orleans really is a unique blend of cultures I've never experienced anywhere else in the world. Music, food, language/dialect, ethnicity are all unique to that small segment. Does not fit any stereotype, but it is fun.
