Specialized Chalks - Pricing/Performance/Pre-shot routine/etc.

My top 3 in order are Kamui Roku, V10 and probably the HOW oily chalk.

The ones I really didn't care for, Kamui Kageki - way to messy and the Cyborg On chalk, rock hard.

Who likes the rails covered with nasty chalk dust debris? Masters and equivalents leave way too much on all surfaces. Prove it. Grab a cue to chalk under an extremely bright light.
Watch the dust particulate shower down off the cue as you chaulk. Proves the cleanliness of v10 and Pag types vs legacy Masters types.

I use masters, chalk sometimes, probably once every break and every fifth shot or so. I use a lot of English and rarely miscue.

I hate the new chalks, they always leave impossible to clean marks on my table.
Taom doesn't. The older Kamui 'lipstick' chalk' is notorious for this. I found a piece of Taom green and i'm amazed at how everything stays cleaner: balls, hands, cloth, case, you name it. It gives Master the ORANGE five and the snap.

Blue Diamond, $7 for two cubes. Filed the first one flat to about 1/4", now using the second. Friend bought Tiger, 3 cubes for $18. I tried his but it's too soft and messy compared to the Blue Diamond. Another guy I play uses TAOM and loves it.

For decades was a triangle chalk user. Tbh wasn't unhappy with it, but tried Taom (green) to see what all the fuss was about and would never go back. Other chalks feel so messy in comparison and it just goes on so nicely. Don't know how long they last as my original one is still going strong after 18 months or so (play once or twice a week).

1. Which brand do you prefer?
2. Why do you like it over other brands? What do you dislike about those other brands?
3. What is the price point of the brand you use per cube.
4. How long does a piece last you?
5. Did switching to a new piece affect your preshot routine?
  1. Predator Pure Soft.
  2. I'm under the impression all the new chalks are about equal, but prefer the size/shape of the Pure (octagonal and bigger around).
  3. $25-30
  4. I don't lose chalk so it lasts at least 3-4 months. I don't use it all either, as soon as i start dropping it because it's getting thin i replace it.
  5. Nope. But i don't carry a 12-pack of chalk with me anymore. Just the piece i'm using and a backup.
Performance isn't much different between new chalks and Master, but the cleanliness and longevity are the deciders for me.

Predator Pure Chalk Hard (green). Probably same as Taom. No mess, and much less table cleaning and ball cleaning. I think the one piece that I bought will last over a year.

The less mess part is the only reason I use it now.

Wanted to create a thread for this as the Pagulayan Shaft thread started going that way.

Wanted to gather opinions on specialized chalk, (TAOM, Titlist, Pag) and why you like it? I've been strict with Blue Master forever, always using my own piece, never what is provided at whatever venue. Usually buy them a gross at a time and work through that gross over a year or 2.

Some of my questions:

1. Which brand do you prefer?

2. Why do you like it over other brands? What do you dislike about those other brands?

3. What is the price point of the brand you use per cube.

4. How long does a piece last you?

5. Did switching to a new piece affect your preshot routine?

I'm not looking to make the switch, I'm curious of the reasons to use it over Master especially with the larger price point per cube. I'm not a cheapass by any means, but there seems to be a lot of contradictory talk in that thread with people taking shots at the price tag on the Pagulayan shaft, but are ok with 20 dollars per cube of chalk, so I'm curious of the reasons/justification.

Edit to add: I too think the Pag shaft is priced too high.

I prefer any of the "premium chalks" in the video below since they play very clean. They also last a long time. Currently, I mostly use Predator Pure.

For more info and comparisons, see:

Are you sponsored by predator to use their chalk??

No, but they do send it to me for free. I also use Taom, which they also send me for free. I have a slight preference for Predator Pure, only because I like the shape better.

In my younger, cheaper days, I would have never shelled out big money for “premium” chalks. Although, I have learned they are well worth the price based on how clean they play and how long they last.

1. Taom or Pagulayan

2. Lasts longer, table stays cleaner, balls stay cleaner. Pag chalk doesnt roll away, lol.

3. $20-$30 per cube

4. In my home pool room, I've had three pieces of Taom on the table for well over 1 year. 10-20 hrs of play per week.

5. Switching didn't change anything routine wise.

You spend a lot of time on your video presentations , thank you.

I'm glad to hear it. You're welcome.

Why is your shaft dipping to the right after ball contact?

Good eye. I noticed that too. I just hit some at the table, and I am not doing it now. I might have been in an awkward position due to the bar stools and tripod behind me to get the camera view I wanted. I should be more careful with this in the future. Thanks for pointing it out.

PAGS - blue

It’s as clean Taom Pyro, but it’s square. My concern I suppose is that it seems to disappear. I honestly hope it isn’t going through my skin.

It’s currently $23. I have now two cubes, so I figure they’ll last me until 2042

No, I stay with pre-shot routine, which includes being too lazy to get to one of the two cubes when they’re sitting on the other end of the table

Mine will often veer to the right after my grip hand hits my body and rides up my chest.

I use whatever is in my bag or on the rail of the table. I went through all the chalks you could think of, liked some more than others, but at the end of the day I kept losing $20 pieces of chalk and I don't like that.

Back to free chalk for me.
