Does playing Pool with Families or Friends mess up your real game??

you had something to prove after bragging
you were not with family to have fun
Well, yeah ☺ The adults don't get the same as the children. The age and level of interest makes it a full spectrum of activities avaliable. The todlers get something to stand on and I shag balls for them as they roll em around by hand.

Definitely the time to practice a handy skill to have.
You don't have to be lights-out good with your opposite hand to play the occasional near the side rail shot that you can't reach with your normal hand.
Quickly switch and play the shot as if it's no big deal.
Often your opponent can't do that. Makes you better than him!

best i've done is a BNR left handed. but you gotta keep that oiled up, if you stop practicing it it will soon get rusty. i think extensions has made players less prone to play opposite handed these days

It is hard for me to play with anyone who doesn't play well.

It gets old slaughtering baby seals and I lose interest.

I like playing people who shoot run-out pool.
I enjoy playing against strong(er) players. I'm not supposed to win... I enjoy the learning experience and knowing I have to concentrate/focus. I have a family member that loves to play however the phone is out and I do not like that. I'm good with beginners if they are listening and serious about playing pool not skeeball.

While not family I made friends with the Vietnamese community in Bellevue WA. My skill level was significantly higher so I had a personal rule for the 9 ball ring games I was accepted in. It was to ride the 9 at every opportunity and never make 3 in a row without riding the 9. Well when that was still too strong I offered to play left handed. That didn't last long either. They did get their money's worth as they did learn at 1 and 2 and then go to Tacoma and play within the Asian community for 50 a game.
The Left handed play did last long enough for it to become equal to my Right.

Power strokes either way? My left hand is still weak like that.

So a one legged man in a butt kicking contest comes to mind. The 3 legged races is another chapter. 😉
My pitch to the young uh apprentice when, "I can't " was the reply would be, "how on earth do you manage to walk and uh no less Run?"
Can't Means Won't.
The challenge is giving a lesson in a fun manner.
With a room of 6 to 10 players of varied skills, we played Scotch Doubles 9 ball 1 and 2 on the 5 and 9. The strongest got the weakest. And so on.
One night me and the Midget won the game. 🤷‍♂️ either way it was a fun and challenging way to spend the evening after work.

"A Real Game" ????
"a real game" is the mutter by Yoda as he shakes head and walks away, slowly.
Of course Fonzy would be able to break it down at the chalk board.
You know the definition of Game.
There is the Fish and Game Department in the federal branch.
Uh oh, I have found a fork in the path, uh Grasshopper. 😉

"I pay for lessons. " and of course I charge for lessons. 🤷‍♂️
My "paid lessons " were 20 an hour once a week with 1 hour per day practice for 6 weeks. No Gambling while in school.
The first week after I earned 200+. 🤔 So a good investment.

Yeah yeah yeah, Walk before Rin, got it. Next?
First you gotta crawl then stand then walk.
Start over with the crawl. Give it a week then learn to stand then walk then run. 🤷‍♂️ simple is as simple does is a favorite movie quote by Forest Gump.

"But But, I have had 6 weeks of lessons and still can't play the 🎻 "
"Yes Dear but your lessons were on the Piano." 🤷‍♂️

I was having a surgery back in 2007, major whittling on my back. I asked the doctor if I could play the piano after the surgery. "Sure, a little healing time and you will be able to play it just fine."

"Good, I never could play the piano before!"

That joke was so old the doctor hadn't heard it!

Side tracking the sidetrack, some of the oldest writing then known to exist was found. It was a list of jokes. I knew about three-fourths of them, maybe more!

I like playing people who shoot run-out pool.

I just use it as practice time. Hitting points, accidental safeties on myself, if not shooting a rotation game; choose the hardest pattern and take the hardest possible path from ball to ball. When playing somebody far worse, I really do play the table to stay interested. Gambling for more than a beer gets interesting but I don't gamble with friends or family for more.

Playing bangers is a fine time to practice missing too. When I made very tough shots I was quiet as a mouse. When I "missed shots" I tossed out the kind of theatrics I had learned from people trying to persuade themselves and others that they were better than they were playing at the moment.

To make it more interesting and enjoyable, I shoot every other shot opposite handed.

First my normal right hand stroke, then left handed, back to right, then left, etc. It does
2 things. It makes the game more even than if I just played right handed and at the same
time, I get to practice my left handed shots since I really hate bridges. I have a Tony Ryan
18” cue extension but bridges are still necessary on a 9’ table when you are only 5’8” tall.

Being able to shoot ambidextrously for some shots helps me obtain better position and
pocket balls better than if I used a bridge. God help me if I played snooker on a 12’ table.

I play one of my leagues with my wife. That really challenged my game at first, but after about 5 years, I've mostly learned how to be a supportive husband, mostly. It's a real challenge at times. What I've learned also is that I can only control my own game and thats all I should worry about.
