Cue Order

So, they asked you for the specs or want to order the same cue? What does that have to do with ordering a custom cue which is not a copy of yours?Nothing. If they are beginners, they would not know what affects the playability of a cue hence knew what to order.
Read again. I was responding to your post that you are saying that the people that want to have a custom or a cue built for them have years of experience to know what they want. You basically are saying that everyone knows about playing pool and cue building. To put is simply, even novices also buy custom cues. Not to mention, that people that play pool are not necessarily cuemakers.

I never heard of no novice ''ordering'' a custom cue.Maybe they buy one that is for sale, sure.Again, why order a custom cue if you can't assess the facors of it's playability and not buy one off the shelf that you can ''try'' before buying?Makes zero sense to me.But we would have to have cuemakers answer that question. What has people who play pool to do with having to be cuemakers?

You must have gotten up feeling cranky or looking to quarrel. I said I don’t like or care for his SP cues or his demeanor
when a customer asks for a cue to be made that is contrary to the way he builds his cues. That’s a criticism of his work
not his character, integrity of anything else you inferred from my post that I never implied was about him as a individual.
You said he was dumb, ignorant and less talented. That speaks to charactor imo.

Custom cues are a certain amount of eye candy too let's not forget. Aside from playability the person ordering the cue has a certain look, wood, colors, wraps, points, veneers, inlays, materials, etc that is pleasing to that persons eye.
Over the past 10 years I have ordered 2 custom cues. Both from the same shop. This shop has a very good idea of what I like basically through our verbal give and take with each other and I give the builder room for his own creativity so he enjoys making my cue.
Both cues came out beyond my expectations.

A lot of people are happy with Schmelkes. Warped shaft and butt hits pretty hard since I transport and store my cues carefully.

When it fell apart and I found the insert hadn't been threaded in, that was a deliberate build choice. The tiny bit of glue was another build choice. Had they threaded the insert in the glue would have probably been adequate. Had they fully glued the insert in the barely scored hole might have been adequate. When they combined both cut corners in the same place my cue literally fell apart.

Five minutes more time building my cue would have made a better cue although the wood warping was an issue. Years ago I bought a forty dollar Dunlap which was functionally a much better cue. It never fell apart so I don't know how it was constructed. I would have to say adequately for the Dunlap, not adequately for the Schmelke just based on my experience. Had the Dunlap came apart I might be talking about it's build quality but of course the same is true of my customs.

If we pay more than toy price for a cue we expect it to be adequate to play pool with. My particular Schmelke wasn't.

Did you let Schmelke know about that cue falling apart so he'd have the chance to make it right? From what I've read, people have good experiences with having issues resolved when they get something less than they were expecting.

Like'm or not, league players are what usually pay the bills at a pool hall. They also buy more cues, mostly custom, and they are book and gadget freaks.

They buy snacks, beer and drinks, and enough cigarettes to warm the pool room with the heater off.

They, as a group, are loud and inconsiderate of people playing around them even if they know enough to get out of each others way when somebody is trying to shoot.

I realize that all league players aren't like this. Like lawyers it is the 99% that give the one percent a bad name! Until and unless things change these people are the life blood not so much of pool but of pool halls. No halls kinda takes the fun out of playing pool. Back to playing on the grass I guess.

We can try to politely educate these people, meantime we need to appreciate their buying power. By the end of their first league season most of these people have more gear than I have purchased lifetime, well over fifty years.

Seems to me most of these league people buy three playing cues before they settle down. Some are custom, some are higher end production cues. Few are cues like we buy for kids to bang around on our home tables.

The first cue is like their friend or spouse's. The second cue has some consideration of playability but probably more show than go. The third cue will play like they want it to although it might still be a bit on the flashy side.

There are a lot of things the cue builder considers that the customer rarely does. Having fought with the issue of incompatible expansion rates and a boss like a typical green cue buyer in another life, if a customer wants silver and stone side by side they are talking to the wrong builder. A lot of other things rarely considered.

A serious cue builder is building for today and for twenty or thirty years down the road, maybe longer. That is a tall order with the materials and the equipment being used by most.

Even after buying the best of everything the cue builder has no control of how the cue is treated once the cue leaves his hands.

I had everything ready to build cues years ago. I had a river of wood that had been in my hands for eight years minimum. Some of it over a hundred years old. I didn't trust my adhesives or my wood after a couple of named storms hit. I could have bummed wood from builders I trusted but I wanted wood under my control for a minimum of two years before building with it.
Did you let Schmelke know about that cue falling apart so he'd have the chance to make it right? From what I've read, people have good experiences with having issues resolved when they get something less than they were expecting.

My cue shop was up and running. When I saw what they had done it wasn't possible to repair that shaft properly with that vastly oversized insert hole.

As I said, the crappy insert install was because of two deliberate build choices. Not accidental, and they sent the shaft out like that. Had I done something like that I would have trashed the shaft. I had no reason to think they wouldn't do just as bad again since it was a deliberate decision, not a material issue or even a mistake.

I wanted to see how they built a cue at that price point, I figured I found out. I had about two gross of shaft blanks on hand. I could build my own shaft cheaper and with less hassle than shipping the bad shaft back and forth.

Mr. Helfert…….me thinks you inserted your foot in mouth and don’t know how to remove it.

I never wrote that, implied it or referred to his character, intelligence or integrity. You some
how felt it necessary to defend Al & criticize me. That would normally be just routine around
these parts but this time you really are inventing a scenario that never occurred except in
your estimation. Well, usually you get it right on most topics and threads but this time you
missed the mark miserably. Nonetheless, I’ll let others judge your comments and reaction.

I suspect he's referring to this from your post.

"To decline building a cue my way is a cue maker’s choice & a pretty dumb business approach, IMO.
It seems arrogant, especially since more talented, heralded cue makers build their cues differently."

You could argue that he took it out of context maybe but he doesn't appear to be making it up. You kind of did say he seems arrogant, makes dumb business decisions and is less talented than other cue makers.

Oh……I get it….. because I referred to his business approach as being dumb, JH likely inferred I was referring to his intelligence as stupid. as contrasted with his business approach and bedside demeanor.

I suppose if you had a predisposition to how you interpreted my post it can influence your reaction. Personally, it matters little to me since I’d never order a SP from Al or any cue builder for that matter that resisted building a cue to my specs.

Bottomline is I’m not paying anyone to build a cue the way they want, especially when their reasoning is cockeyed. I stand by my original post and any since…, Nuf Ced.

Making dumb business decisions does not make someone a dumb person and I would say that there is a certain arrogance in telling someone that they are not qualified to know that what they want in a cue to be correct.

Yes, somebody wanting a 32 ounce cue built could invite some questions and suggestions from the maker but saying a 19 ounce cue cant draw so you need a lighter one is simply absurd especially since it's common knowledge that Reyes and Bustamente have used 21 ounce cues for most of their careers.

If a cuemaker would tell me that I would reply with '' Oops, sorry, wrong number''

Perhaps but as you’ve learned, there always is an alternative sooner or later that comes along.
Besides the bottomline is I am the customer, it’s my money and I am entitled to get what I want.

If what I want is inferior to how he’d otherwise build a cue, you still build it my way since I am
hiring you to build a cue and not to build just any cue, especially if it’s different than what I want.

Maybe it was my loss but I doubt it. I’ve played with one of his cues and I liked a Schmelke SP more,
3/8 x10 flat faced, 12.75mm (4 oz.) & 14.5 oz butt. I’m sure Al has his fans and I happen to not be one.
Yeah, I'm not having a black tuxedo tailor made to be told red looks better on me...

I definitely would have walked...no...RAN, away from that one...constructive suggestions from the cue maker is always welcome, but, even if he might be the greatest cue maker on the planet, the bottom line is, it's MY money, and he's gonna build what I want...
Perfect statement.

this forum is turning into a fighting forum instead of fellow pool players talking pool.

moderation is needed around here before all the few good posters leave and then its like the old rec. dot forums long gone.

I just repeated the exact words you used in criticizing Al and the way he ran his business.
