    Porper Vs Hightower

Yes, I brought centres together. Yes, the chuck is running true. Tailstock centre 1mm to left of headstock centre. I don't even need to measure it, the problem is clear to see. Error is the same with quill shut or fully extended. This tells me tailstock casting is not lined up with the...

    Porper Vs Hightower

Do you have any more info on that please? My new Porper lathe is out. The tail stock is approximately 1mm to the left of centre of headstock. :( If anyone knows anything more, or has heard about this issue, please let me know. Having said that, despite mine being 'bent', if I were asked for...

    4 Points from 1 Block

Did that, but I think my eyes must be going because I cannot see it clearly in those pictures. :D Thank you for explaining. Yes, I see those lines in the finished cue clearly and this would tell me that the veneers were not mitred. But I was unable to make out from your pics whether they...

    4 Points from 1 Block

I am puzzled. How can they match up like that if they are not mitred? I must be missing something here, forgive my ignorance.

    4 Points from 1 Block

May I ask how you cut the mitres on the veneers and get them fitting perfectly around the central square stock?

    Ferrule Types

Thank you. That is a very interesting test. And I now know there are far more ferrules than I had heard of  Although possibly the most boring video I have ever watched :boring2: :D Now that the relative 'hardnesses' are proven, I would very much like to hear how they actually equate to...

    Ferrule Types

Thank you, I will try to find that. What is Juma? Some sort of plastic? I'm not asking for a definitive 'best' answer as such. I'm just curious to see if there is a concensus of opinion on specific materials and their effect on 'feel' and cueball reaction. I figured with all the cuemakers on...

    Ferrule Types

I have been intrigued reading about the numerous ferrule material you guys use. May I ask has anyone written a detailed list of the types which show the range from 'hard hit' to 'soft hit'. Or indeed, materials that seem to work better for the low deflection everyone seems obsessed about? Are...

    predator ferule help

Thanks, appreciate the reply. I did not know you could patent a hole in wood though :D Do any other manufacturers produce a shaft that is bored at the front? Or 'protect 'their ferrules in the same way?

    predator ferule help

Please excuse my ignorance, but is there something special about Predator ferrules? Without asking what they're made of, are they actually made of a unique material? Another thing I don't know, are Predator shafts the ones that are bored out at the tip end? Thanks, and please go easy on me...

    Gaboon vs "regular" Ebony

There's also a Vietnamese Ebony (or at least that was what they told me it was when I bought it a few years back) which looks relatively black but when you sand it, the dust is green, and the wood has a greenish hue. Horrible stuff. Unfortunately this is true. However, the back door to China...

    Gaboon vs "regular" Ebony

Lol, I thought I did give the op some helpful advice in general about Ebony. Not sure why you would have a problem with that, or make the odd link to my ego? If he were lucky enough to come across some Ceylon Ebony he should be aware it is the best choice possible, followed by African as the...

    Gaboon vs "regular" Ebony

Ceylon or Sri Lankan Ebony is the best Ebony. But you'll be licks to get some these days. African (Gaboon) is not as good. But these days African is the blackest there is. Macassar is a different beast altogether with brown and black stripes. It is nothing like 'black' Ebony.

    one piece cores

Ignorance probably. I can guarantee it's not because the 'popular' glues are more suited to the job. Plus, in fairness, it's a little inconvenient having to mix it, and sets slowly (but that's not necessarily a bad thing). There may also be shelf life issues although I have never experienced...

    one piece cores

I can tell you from personal experience that Cascamite (old name, be re-branded as Extramite and Polymite) is an excellent wood glue if used for the right purpose. It should not be used for items immersed in water, but for all other general use there is no other issue. My experience runs well...

    one piece cores

Good article. I would agree wholeheartedly that polyurethane glues are not as strong. Easy, yes, but I've experienced several problems and will only now use it for unimportant bonds. Would have also liked to have seen Cyanoacrylate and Cascamite/Extramite/Polymite in those tests. Be very...

    Porper Lathe Mod

Aha! Good to know there is someone else out there with a Porper lathe mod. Yes, good idea, and one which I considered. But for what I need, it would create more work, whereas the spindle does not limit me or create any extra work at all. It took an hour to make a few collets that suit...
