Finishing issues, white spots in wood grain.

Stop at 320, blow off the wood then use a micro fiber cloth with the grain to clean out the pores. Then spray on finish. At this point you will have sealed off any pores and can go from there. Some woods particularly purple heart have white mineral deposits in the pores that are just there and...

    pin glue / epoxy

Depending on the quality of your work you might be better off using one glue over another. Myself, I always use 5 minute for joint screws, Haven.t had one come loose yet and it is the best epoxy for ease or removal of the screw should it become necessary. If you have one come out while...

They don't float if you let the air out.

    Ferall length

I have never weighed a single one. Why should I. To make it really simple. Ferrule material sinks in water, maple floats. I am having a hard time believing you are serious.

    Ferall length

Maybe that is why you use shorter ferrules. I don't care what the ferrule costs but I do care how the cue performs and a shaft with a lighter weight ferrule causes less deflection than a heavier ferrule. I watched Ginky shoot a ball into a side pocket with inside english and he missed the ball...

    Ferall length

Shorter ferrules weigh less than longer ferrules and the decrease of weight at the end of the cue reduces deflection.

HELP: Where can I get Radial Pins?

The brass pin looks like a Uni-Loc radial connecting pin sold by Atlas billiards. The steel pin looks like it has been through a war and was on the losing side. Doesn't have the quality of the brass screw.

    Flat spotted measles balls

I was talking to Bill Smith, Mr 3 cushion here and he mentioned that the measles billiard balls in the local pool room all had flat spots. I was there today and indeed, every spot on the white and yellow ball was either flat or had shrunk more than the rest of the ball. With the spot at the...

    Sugar spot

I had the same thing happen to me on the final pass with a shaft that had a lot of work in the ring and I didn't feel like making a new one. In my case the spot was a few inches from the joint end of the shaft. I found a similar looking piece of maple and inlaid the smallest foot ball shaped...

Why isn't spalted maple used more in cues?

Wow, there sure are a lot of opinions, many of which make no reference to basic logic prior to, or during their formation. First, spalting is caused by a fungus that gets into either dead trees or those that have been severely stressed. The staining occurs along the edges of the infestation...

Historic Cues. Do you have any?

In 1973 I had my Palmer stolen and I called George and met him in his shop. At the time I was fooling around restoring, inlaying and refinishing cues so we talked for quite a while and he showed me how he put on his finish and gave me a jar of his finish to try. I also ordered a plain 4 point...

    What happened here?

Whatever the case may be and I don't think the phenolic was smeared over any orange, the good/great news is that it is as easy a fix as is possible. Turn off the butt cap and orange ring, then replace them. Any other damaged orange ring would be way more trouble.

    Kingwood Bleeding

The acetone and denatured alcohol work the same but I have the alcohol on hand and my acetone is gone. I cut a LOT of rings in varying thicknesses at one time (500 or more) and run thin wire loops through the ones that are the same thickness then drop the rings into a cup of solvent. cover it...

    Kingwood Bleeding

What kind of king wood. I've never had a piece of Brazilian king wood bleed. If you are using camatillo, some times called Mexican king wood, you're probably screwed. That stuff bleeds after the finish has cured. You might soak the rings in acetone for a day or two before you use them ...

Is pool the most difficult sport for an Amateur to turn Pro?

Yeah, but in baseball if you have a contract, which you do, a bad year won't put you out of a job. They're not really comparable sports but if you think all you have to do to play on the Tour is just hit a little white ball up on a stick, you ought to try to hit one 300 yards onto a 25 foot...

Wood stability and how it is cut
