    Roy Malott Passing

Sorry to hear this sad news. Condolences to the family. Roy helped me in connection with some nice cases that he carried. He was great to talk to, fair, and knew his products well. Once I started dealing with Roy, I did not buy cases from anyone else.

    Two Collections Come Together

What fantastic memories and stories! It sounds like your father was a great man, and that you enjoyed a wonderful relationship with each other. He was teaching you right up to the end. Given the meaning and importance that each of your cues has for you, I'd say you have the most valuable cue...

Ruth Cranfield, Beloved Wife of the "Babe"

Thank you for this post, Hoot! Ruth was a lovely and gracious person who gave so much to her family. Ruth was also an important figure in her community. As one example, she was extremely dedicated to the kids in the bowling leagues that she managed for so many years. Ruth had to put up...

    ping pong top

Yes, it can be done. There are several brands of ping pong conversion tops that fit on a 4-1/2 x 9 foot table. The trick is that, with 9-foot pool tables, the ping pong top will not hang over on the width so the net cannot clamp on in the usual way. So, there has to be a special way for the...

    Your Favorite Pool/Billiards Literature

Agree with "McGoorty." Also, "The Color of Money" by Walter Tevis -- better than (and much different from) the movie. I liked Danny DiLiberto's "Road Player." For something that's not road stories or instructional, "Shooting Pool" by Mike Shamos and George Bennett.

    Favorite 14.1 Drills

To see a master run through the L drill, here's Danny Barouty giving a demo -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7EpnOMqFUU. Using all 15 object balls, it's not easy, but it's excellent practice.

    Any tips for a beginner?

Great that you've become interested in 14.1 Lots of good advice on this thread. Also, sent you a PM. Good luck with the game! Larry Moy

    Jimmy Caras Anecdote

Bob Maidhoff was a close personal friend of Jimmy Caras for many years. Bob has many great stories about Mr. Caras, and Bob's room -- Drexeline Billiards in Drexel Hill, PA -- has fantastic Jimmy Caras memorabilia on display. Larry Moy

    "The Secret Of Pool" Thread

This is great advice -- short and sweet. Might just modify "watch videos" to say "watch great players." It's more fun to do this at the poolroom, but videos work too.

    Diamond Jims Nanuet N.Y

... and I should add that it's Ken Kerner's room -- a famous AZer, player, gentleman, and Mr. HighEndCues himself!

    Diamond Jims Nanuet N.Y

Haven't been able to get out lately, but when I was playing more I enjoyed going to Diamond Jim's. It's a great room -- excellent equipment and players. In the summer, Toby Sweet comes up from Fla and plays there. Larry Moy

    R.I.P. George Fels

Was hoping that news of George Fels' passing was some sort of mistake. George was -- and will always be -- so important to so many of us and how we learned pool. George was often why we became interested in the game in the first place! I was an unabashed fan, and said so in a Letter to the...

    Toby Sweet

Ken, Always great to hear from you as well. Lots of people spent most of their youth in poolrooms, but not many of them have done as much with it as you have, in terms of playing ability and otherwise. That's something you and Toby have in common. Will give you a call soon if that's alright...

    Toby Sweet

Toby's poolroom, named Holli's (after his daughter), was in Nanuet, NY (right next to Spring Valley). He owned it with Vinnie Cass, another great guy and a strong player in his own right. It was a fantastic room to hang around ... lots of characters ... and the first room where I ever struck a...

Best day of my 14.1 career!

Congratulations on all the progress ... a perfect day of pool! It was nice you ran into someone with both the knowledge and willingness to help you -- sounds like you did your part by absorbing and applying as much as you could.

Unqualified Recommendation -- Jay Spielberg of A-1 Billiard Service

Mentioned this as part of a thread on a different topic (Simonis installation videos), but thought Jay deserved his own thread. For years, my table was not playing right -- rails slow, not as level as it should have been, banking angles off, etc. I had paid other folks (more than one) to try...

    King Cobra Video..?

A friend and I are both working with Jay Spielberg right now. The jobs aren't quite finished yet, but Jay has already proven himself to be fantastic to work with -- knowledgeable, responsive, enthusiastic, on time, responsible, and honest. Plus he loves the game and is meticulous about getting...

Nice run, MCP! A significant accomplishment after only a short time with 14.1. Must've felt good. As you've said, straight pool is a beautiful and rewarding game. Plus -- whether you're having a good day or a bad day -- it takes so much concentration, everything else falls away, and we all...
