yes I am 57
In the mid 70s I was a pretty good one pocket player, put the cue down for 30+ years but found the game again a short time back unfortunately what I found was a lot of 9 ball.
Don't get me wrong I have a lot of respect for the game it requires high level skills to play it well but it's not for me.
So I decide to tackle 14.1 and after about 6 months of rigorous practice, finding the correct weight, feel, action of a cue, practice matches, reading some good material by Johnny Holiday, Phill Capelle taking a few lessons etc: I play some guy yesterday and can't seem to run more than 5 balls i am totally discouraged.
DO I WANT TO BE DOING THIS?
I Go on AZ consider putting my cues up for sale and focus on something else
I am really bummed.
Today I go to the Pool Room early ask for a table get my cue set them up and run 23 my best run since I started with 14.1 --- I have no idea what it means but what I know is when you are in stroke and things start to come together 14.1 is a beautiful game and rewarding in many ways.
I will keep my cues, Keep playing and hope to run my age one day.

Right on. Stay the course and you'll derive a lot of joy from 14.1.
 
Welcome to the club.There are days everytime I get to the table I run20.30 40 whatever, and there are days I can't run ten .I think for average players the inconsistancy is all mechanical The pros are pros partly because there mechanics are almost robotic .IMHO
I think 14.1 is the best game . Don't give up.

14.1 is the Best. Stick with it. It is a game that you can practice by yourself & never get bored. Keep those cues and hang in there. Also, write here on the Forum and become one of the family.

Nice run, MCP! A significant accomplishment after only a short time with 14.1. Must've felt good. As you've said, straight pool is a beautiful and rewarding game. Plus -- whether you're having a good day or a bad day -- it takes so much concentration, everything else falls away, and we all need that from time to time.

You've probably already done this, but watching 14.1 videos is a great help too -- many good ones from Accu-stats and online.

Congrats and welcome to the forum! Your post, as well as Mr. Nelson's reply, are a great endorsement for the game.

Sometimes trying to hard hurts your game. Sounds like you had your best run when you relaxed and just let it happen.

I don't know if this is true but someone said that Mosconi was just an average player until he threw 4 balls on the table and tried to run them out and setting up a break ball.
 
I've been playing Straight Pool a long time, with a lot of current-rules-9 ball thrown in. I think it takes a different mind set and an ability to relax and let the game happen. Too much thinking, while it rarely effects my 9 ball game, can ruin my Straight Pool game. I've had times like you describe more times than I can remember. Recently, I had to change cues from one playing cue I have to the other before I was able to accomplish anything. Has to do with my fingers swelling from water retention and going from 13 mm to 12 1/2.
Stick with it, it's worth it!!
