Two of mine - a Diveney pete with G-10 pin and old growth shaft (top) and a Sugartree SP with tung oil finish and BEM buttsleeve for balance. Simplicity and playability sums up a SP for me. A well-made sneaky imo plays just as well as any top-draw cue, especially if you like wrapless cues. :)

Single wood? You might want to check out the Action Elite series - good quality for the price. Better still, get a Mezz wrapless plain jane - it's slightly above your budget but well worth it imo. (www.miki-mezz.com)

For me, 1. Length of cue is from end of buttcap to ferrule. 2. Shaft diameter = diameter of shaft where it meets the ferrule. But I would check the ferrule too to see if it varies from top to bottom. 3. No kidding, you mean to say you must get those damn things off when weighing??:D
