no smoking as of 4-15... ways to get around?

Smokers are not a protected class (defined by the Civil rights act as race, color, religion, or national origin), so anti-smoking laws are not a violation of the US Civil Rights Act. But even if smokers were a protected class, they are not being banned from public places... they simply are not...

    My 1st Chess Tournament

Chess is a great game. Some of my happiest childhood memories of my grandfather are from playing chess. It helps develop patience, forward thinking, etc. It's not a game you can force on a kid, but if your son enjoys it, it's great that you're supporting it.

    What do you guys think?

Nor is that an APA rule. Why would they make her take 2 balls down? Isn't that an old hustler move?

    Goodbye APA, it's been fun...

Actually, that's not true. Your opponent's S/L has no direct impact on the calculation of your handicap.

    Goodbye APA, it's been fun...

What Black Cat's advocating is intelligent management of handicaps- it's not sandbagging. He's not asking his 2/3 to lose or pad innings, just making it likely that s/he'll lose despite a best effort.

Which ONE GAME gives you the most versatility?

I don't disagree with the notion that straight pool helps most other games, but one thing it hasn't improved for me are kicks and banks. In the 5 months I've been playing straight pool, I think I've taken one kick shot (outside of the occasional intentional foul onto the back of the rack), and...

Converting Bar Tables to Use a Small Cue Ball

You could always do what Byrne suggested in "New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards ".... have 3 cue balls. The third scratch is a loss of game.

    8-Ball - Shooting in your opponent's balls

Not if you contact your ball first. There are times when giving BIH and potting your opponents ball is the right move. For example, (I'd diagram this on cue-table, but I can't use shockwave at work) in a league match my teammate had two balls up, her opponent (a runout shooter) had three up...

Handicapping for friends/casual players: Need Advice

When my girlfriend first started playing pool, I beat her pretty consistently. We're both very competitive, and she hates losing, but would have hated anything condescending even more (eg, me having to bank out, etc). One solution she came up with was for *both* of us to play left handed. As...

    Alabama 8ball(8ball variations)

wow- any foul when on the 8 is a loss of game! I hate playing in bars where failure to contact the 8 is a loss- didn't realize it used to be a BCA rule.

    Side spin does not transfer

In Pete's defense, that's not what he's saying. He's saying that the object ball picks up "twist" which has, as a component, side spin transferred from the object ball, and as another component, follow created by friction with the cloth. The confusion is that he's claiming that's not side spin...

    Side spin does not transfer

If by "still sliding", you mean "only rotating on a vertical axis", then - yeah, that's the point! There are 3 hits. The first shows what you argue happens. The second two show what you claim is impossible.

    8-ball vs 9-ball For TV

I think Capelle's runout percentages may be deceiving. He compares the runout percentage of hundreds of 9-ball matches from many pros to the runout percentages of one 8 ball tournament featuring Roger Griffis, Johnny Archer, Mika Immonen, Francisco Bustamante, Troy Frank, and Efren Reyes. I...

    Side spin does not transfer

Have you looked at the Dave Alciatore's video, linked many times now? It shows very clearly a transfer of english, with the object ball moving 3x its length spinning only on a vertical axis. Just in case you haven't here it is again: HSV A.84 - throw and spin transfer for a large offset and...

    Non-straightforward shots in straight pool

I have two tapes (borrowed from and never returned to Hoboken_APA) In Jim Rempe's "how to run a 100 balls" - I think he shoots one combo out of a cluster. One of his breaks sent a few balls up table, but I only recall one long shot up table. The other is Dallas West beating Mike Zuglan in the...

    Side spin does not transfer

You've never seen a pool ball stop moving, while still spinning? I understand the distinction you're making (I think), but as Colin and others have pointed out, vertical axis spin and horizontal axis spin can be treated seperately. There's no need to contort ones mind to imagine "twisting": the...

    Side spin does not transfer

A video showing precisely that has been linked several times already: http://www.engr.colostate.edu/~dga/pool/high_speed_videos/new/HSVA-84.htm On each shot of the 3 shots, there is transfer of vertical axis spin. On the medium and fast shots, the object ball moves off screen with only...

Why does everybody always knock the APA?

In APA rules, the table is not open if you sink balls from one group on the break. If you sink no balls (duh) or balls from both groups (regardless of how many), the table remains open.
