My 1st Chess Tournament

So far pool is beating chess, I've been in many pool rooms and thousands of times but I can still count the times I've seen the police called in. Chess at Burger King on the other hand is now 1 for 1!

Today I took my 7 yr old to his and my first chess tournament (I don't play but I figure it's a good method to get him to improve some mental skills) at a Burger King in Mass. It's totally legite with some Mass federation running it with kids 16 and under, 11 and under and 8 and under.
so anyway we're standing there waiting for the next round when we hear about 10 ft away one mother yelling at another mother "your son is just a sore loser" and the other one putting the hand up and saying "talk to the hand, talk to the hand" the other one gets aggravated and ut oh, she pushes the hand down! Big no. no. No cat fight but they sure gave me a laugh as I said to my son, "you see that, yep, Well that's how we don't act"
Someone actually called the cops and they were interviewing witnesses!
It was like straight out of Searching for Bobby Fisher!

Pool, still batting like .990,
Chess, watch out for these vicious people they're batting .000 lol

Ya know i have seen fights or people yelling at each other, at some of the craziest events that you can imagine. heres a List of places i can remember seeing people yelling at each other over piddly shit.

Karate Tournament - Expecially during the kids portions, you see parents yelling like someone is killing thier kid lol.

High School Wrestling - Its basically the same as the karate tournaments parents yelling at the refs for calls the missed, and the calls they make lol.

Little League games - Personal story, when i was 12, in a championship game my dad was kicked outa the game, he was in the stands, and got into it with the Ump, well after the game, my dad got in the umps face, and used words that i didnt know were in the dictionary lol.

Chess Tournaments - And yes i have seen the movie Searching for Bobby Fisher lol, it was basically the same thing, parents yelling and stuff at each other while the kids look wondering whats happening lol.

Now in all the times i have been in a Pool Hall, i have yet to see a Fight, i have seen people argue, but its more about stupid personal stuff and not the pool game at hand.

The one time i did hear about a fight or scuffle at a pool hall it wasnt much and the owner whom i know,, got in the middle and took both of the kids by the throat and told them to chill the fukk out lol, which basically ended it lol.

Its funny how people think all Pool halls are seedy and have fights constantly, when its mainly the seedy back door bars that have this crap.

Although I didn't see it, more than one person who witnessed it filled me in. It was at a wellknown pool establishment in the Windy City. One player, known for whining all the time, probably a gambling addict, usually bets a bundle and loses it too, was playing an old timer who has a good game. Said gambling addict at the end of the match comes at the old timer with his cue, tells him he's gonna ram it you know where. Old timer, a former boxing champion, clocks the addict, knocks him out cold. End of story.

I remember when I was about 10 playing in an ice hockey game, and the game stopped and we all watched 2 moms going at it in the grand stands.....then one kid on the other team starts whimpering...hey! that's MY mom....and we all start busting on him cause we could see her "panties" when they fell between the rows of seats.......Then our team got a delay of game cause I had the puck when we stopped to watch!!!!:D

great memories!

Joe,

You've got to rent "Searching For Bobby Fisher". It's a great movie, but it also is about chess tournaments for kids.

Chess is a great game. Some of my happiest childhood memories of my grandfather are from playing chess. It helps develop patience, forward thinking, etc. It's not a game you can force on a kid, but if your son enjoys it, it's great that you're supporting it.

There was actually a case at a kids hockey game where one parent beat another parent to death. If you don't believe me look it up. I remember seing the video on it. This crazy parent basically pulvarized the skull of another parent.

In my experience high school basketball is the absolute worst when it comes to this kind of crap.

In all the tournaments I have played in I have only seen to actual fights; both involved a fight over a woman not the game. Pool is very laid back, just the way I like it.:)

If anyone is interested in chess books- I have a pretty big collection- about 200 books.

Do you have the list of books? How much are you selling them for?

Thanks

I don't have a list- I have most of the major books- My 60MGs, all the Fred Reinfelds, modern books as well. Just a large collection- I am going to keep the Genesis of Power Chess by Ault. I have The Chess Tutor by Ault in hardback. I just bought them and bought them- Nunn's logical chess was a good one. Chernev was good- I really liked the Winning Chess and Chess Tactics. Good stuff.

I am at work and I can't recall all the names- I have the Think/Plan/Play like a GM series. Art of Attack etc. Alekhine's games, Dumont's basis of combination.

I have almost all the combo books you could ever want- my favorite it Blokh. Most of those are on Chessart 3.0.

Is there any one particular book you are looking for? I was thinking about selling mine in a lots of 20.

I remember my son's only chess tournament when he was 5 (his school taught chess in kindergarten, and I still don't know how to play, lol). The parents sat on the sidelines, away from their kids, and a monitor walked around requiring absolute silence -from the kids and the parents.

Shawn's opponent was a big bully. Once, the kid got mixed up and counted his horse (whatever it's called :p ) up one and over 2 (or up 2 and over 1, whatever) and instead put it back on the wrong square it originally was on, so of course, now, when he counted, he was able to capture a piece.

Also, when Shawn was about ready to Checkmate or whatever, the kid took Shawn's arm and forcibly held it back to stop him from moving that piece. Shawn looked confused and looked askance at me, but since we had to be silent, he needed to fight his own battles. So, of course he lost. I felt like I let him down and he never played tournament chess again. He still knows how to though and doesn't call the horse a horse, like his lamea$$ mother. :D

I would have to see the list as I don't have any particular book in mind.
I have a few hundred books and once in a while will add if I something catches my eye.

On the other hand since now I'm retired, not sure why I still collect it is a compulsion. Although CUE collecting is starting to take over now.

Thanks
