I'm going to add one more to the list: The Simonis X-1 for removing chalk from the cloth. I've concluded that it cannot be doing anything because I've never seen any buildup of chalk on the pad other than a nominal amount when breaking it in. If the chalk isn't adhering to the X-1 pad then...

Is a ‘firm’ grip and ‘short’ backswing okay?

You've gotten good advice so far (imo, non instructor). The thing to realize is that nobody can ultimately figure out what is right for you. Relaxed is always good. It's up to you to figure out how to achieve that (and, actually, to realize what "relaxed" really means). It just takes time to...

    Gus Szamboti 70's

Sounds about right but I still think the high end and rare cues will still be desirable. I'm talking about the $25,000 cues, not $2,500. Now, if Denny Glenn liquidates that's going to hurt values for awhile at least. I'm looking at the stamp collecting market that fell apart completely but...

    Dynasphere 'Bronze' balls...............

I'm saying that if you use something that significantly reduces throw you may find it changes over the course of an evening. For example, when I tested Novus 1 for throw it was initially around 1 inch. After 25 or so trials the throw went up to 4 or 5 inches. That was some years ago so the...

    Dynasphere 'Bronze' balls...............

Just be aware that whatever you use as a trial will be stuck in your cleaner pads. I had been using Novus 1 and had to replace all my pads when I found out it was no good to use. It only takes a little bit to mess things up, IMO.

In addition, the amount of throw can change dramatically over the course of an evening of play.

    Chem-pak ball cleaner?

lol. Let's start over. We are on the same side. You mentioned that Maguire's takes an hour of play to wear off and I said Aramith plays well right out of the ball cleaner. You agreed. Now the confusion: Apparently, it was buckshot who duplicated my throw test and he said they threw the...

    Chem-pak ball cleaner?

Please see post number 34. I was reacting to your comment about McGuires, not Brill. I was the one who did the throw test and I believe you're right about buckshot. He said McGuire's threw consistently which is at odds with your comment about the 1 hour break in period.

    Chem-pak ball cleaner?

So maybe it does not perform the same as Aramith after all.

    Chem-pak ball cleaner?

I'm surprised to hear that. Maybe I have the wrong person. There was a guy who did a throw test like the one I did on Novus 1 vs Aramith and said the Meguir's performed the same. That wasn't you?

    Chem-pak ball cleaner?

If they used a product designed for cleaning balls and not cars they would play normally right out of the ball machine.

    The 100 Shots of Pool

Some guy called Ray says there are only 99 critical shots in pool. Is there one more shot that isn't critical? :)

Some considered him the fifth Beatle.

I think it was Mosconi who said that the great players could just play right away.

Joint protectors. Two piece cues were just fine for 75 years or so but now you need something to protect the joint? Next thing you know they'll be making a joint protector protector. I know some will disagree.

    Gus Szamboti 70's

That seems to be the case, I guess, but I think there will always be interest in the Bushka and Szam level cues.

Obviously, the cue is not for sale unless someone offers stupid money for it. Given that this is more of a "what's it worth now?" thread I'm OK with it, though I don't know if you can track valuation of such things in 6 month time frames. We're not talking about cars or houses.

    English on the break shot.

Mosconi pretty much only had one break shot. A sharp angle that sent the cue ball straight into the pack. Hard to scratch.
