    Atlas metal lathe woes

I built full cues including short-splices on less...way less. You've got the tools and the resources, now have fun.

    Cynergy shaft issues

AI is dumber than the average human. The average human seems to believe AI. Thus the average human is dumber than AI. I fully believe all three of those statements are true even though they directly contradict each other. AI won't take over the world as seen in the dystopian movies like...

    Cynergy shaft issues

Keep fighting the good fight. Everybody thinks that if a $12 device shows a number it is accurate to that number. You've made good and accurate points about the ability to use calipers correctly, their inherent level of accuracy/repeatability, and the manufacturing tolerances. Most people...

I'm so sorry, let me clarify that. I believe that I think that it is my opinion that pool is unwatchable. Let me tell you how this works. When I write something that is not provable by fact, it is my opinion, no matter how I say it. If you are so insecure that you have to point out that it...

    Atlas metal lathe woes

Thanks, I spent a lot of time considering it as a solution. Just make sure to allow for adjustment up (shimming is a fine solution), and alignment of the MA headstock to the lathe axis. Then all you have to do is ensure that the stand goes on the lathe the same every time and you are there.

    Atlas metal lathe woes

Buy a large bore mid America headstock and build a mount to go on your cross slide or make a mount for the ways. I adapted a wood lathe for my machine and built an er50 center steady that is quickly removable and stays centered. I like that better than going through the headstock because it...

    Flat faced 5/16x14 shaft question?

I can't answer that. @Michael Webb probably knows of the top of his head. I don't really do repair work, just build my own.

Things to consider for those forum members buying their first pool cue

100% agree, but I need a way to keep the bumper in and like the look.

    Flat faced 5/16x14 shaft question?

Generally no problem, but I have seen the inserts pull out when tightened. I believe those inserts were improperly installed. Not the end of the world even if it happens.

Things to consider for those forum members buying their first pool cue

Yeah his message changed from all the greatest saying that the shaft had to be an exact weight to 'the greats all put shafts on their cues.' Two ounces is significant. I generally aim for 3/4 to 1.5oz bumper bolt. I make my cues with leather bumpers that have a flat head stainless cap screw...

    Dress code in tournaments

No doubt. I wore a nice pair of casual brown pants, leather shoes, button-up linen shirt and a beater fedora to the bar the other night and had half the place commenting on my excellent style. Forty years ago, that would have been normal...except the fedora.

    Shaft wax/polish

Go figure, they don't register a msds for that, but since it is almost certainly a repackaged version of the car waxes, I looked up the Maguire stuff which lists ethoxylated alcohol, which is a pretty common group of surfactants and emulsifiers.

    Shaft wax/polish

I should clarify. I basically never put anything on my shafts after they are built. The shellac is a step when I am making a new shaft. I put it on when I am sanding 800grit.

    Commentating pool matches

Most of the pool commentary I've seen the commentators devolve into talking about themselves and this one time at band camp.

Take all of the weight out of your break cue

Right, but you could use a lot of muscle power to stop it quickly... Which is a bad idea because it will throw all kinds of weirdness into your stroke. More to Bob's point, imagine having your cue chained to the wall behind you with exactly enough chain to hit 1/4" past initial impact... The...

Things to consider for those forum members buying their first pool cue

Physics says you are wrong. You can't tell the weight distribution by simply holding the cue. You could tell by swinging the cue like a sword or practicing your baton skills. When hitting the ball the vibration will change due to the nodes caused by the heavy added mass. What you are...
