Just curious- what do you use for your coffee beans? I'm a big fan of Ethiopian Sidamo myself.

How do I guage myself A,B,C or D?

I'm a big fat, solid D, but hope to make it up to C some day. Quick question: virtually all the rating systems are based on 9 ball. Is there a rating system A-D for 8 ball? Straight pool? I know I'm still a D in those as well, but am curious what a C player would consist of in 8 ball and 14.1.

Phil Capelle's "Play Your Best Nine Ball." Who's read and what do you thiink?

I'm reading it now, and am enjoying it. I'm a relative newbie to serious pool, though. I also have his PYB Pool, PYB Straight Pool and PYB 8 ball. All of them are worth reading, in my humble opinion.

    Dulles- DC area

Thank you so much for your informative reply. I played in Bedrock last time in town, and liked it. Let's play next time I'm in town.

    Dulles- DC area

Not to hijack or anything, but the title does say Dulles-DC area. So here goes--I'm also going to be in DC tuesday night. Where should I play in The District? I'll be with some people who aren't that into pool, so I'm just looking for a nice room, preferably with a bar. I don't think we'll...

Should The Name "Derby City Classic" Be Changed?

It's not an exact parallel, but a number of sports teams don't play in the actual city that they're named for. New York Giants and Jets both play in Jersey. The Pistons and Lions don't play within the city of Detroit, if I recall correctly.

Will the poor economy make pool popular again

There's another side to it as well. People that have home tables but haven't played on them in years may start staying home and having neighbors, friends, family over to play instead of going out to restaurants, movies, theater, etc. While that doesn't necessarily help pool halls, it does lead...

    Places to play in SF/Oakland/Berkeley?

I appreciate the post, poolplayer. I'm not sure if my wife will let me sneak out for another pool night with my college buddy that lives out here, but if she does I'll check it out.

Am I ever going to get the hang of this?

I agree with Travis that the Phil Capelle books are great. Start with Play Your Best Pool, and then check out his 8 ball, 9 ball and straight pool books. Bear in mind that the 8 ball book is focused more on playing on bar tables, though. I think that anyone here who says that they have never...

Am I ever going to get the hang of this?

I could have sworn that there's another AZ member who's signature has in it a billiards club at the University of Illinois. It might have been Indiana, but I think it was Illinois. Have you checked that out? Also, you mentioned not having a few hundred for an afternoon or so of lessons...

    Places to play in SF/Oakland/Berkeley?

I'm going to be in the SF area for a week in January. I'll be staying with family in the East Bay, in Berkeley. Any places to play in Berkeley area, Oakland, or SF? Just looking for a place with nice tables. Not looking for action. It should be a place that my wife and non-pool obsessed...

    Best Beginner Equipment?

In your price range it seems like a lot of people on this site would suggest a basic Viking or McDermott cue. I just started playing two years ago, and not having played much in 16 or so years (since college). I got a table for my basement, some house cues, and a plain jane Viking F-98 as my...
