    Gorilla Glue 'Foam'

Just a thought. If the foam truly "filled" the insert, you may want to drill out the center before trying to tap it. The tap will clean the threads, but, if the tap cannot advance be cause the center of the hole is blocked, you could strip the threads.

    Turning down a shaft

True dat! Thanks for joining in Greg! You bring up a great point. I wouldn't even attempt to machine cut a shaft that had any "noticeable" wobble. However, I started this thread before I checked the shaft. After I spun it in the lathe, I knew I was going to have to go the labor intensive...

    Turning down a shaft

Thanks! Thanks guys! I didn't think that using a concave live center would be a good idea, but thought I'd ask anyway. I like Dave's idea, but, I also have to pass on the tip that Kelly_Guy sent me in a PM. Face off the end of the shaft just as you would for a tip replacement and then glue...

    Turning down a shaft

Probably a dumb question, but here goes. A customer wants you to turn down a shaft. You're taking enough off that you want to machine it rather than sand it. Do you remove the tip and center drill the tip end to use a 60 degree live center or just mount it with the tip still on using a...

    WTB a stiff shaft.

As a matter of fact I am back in town..... ....but, with the wonders of technology, I can post from anywhere :p

    WTB a stiff shaft.

12mm or less and stiff????? It may be hard to get that combination unless you are comfortable with a conical taper. If you want a pro (or modified pro) taper, 12mm or less is going to be pretty "whippy".

    CNC Newby Help

Sorry I don't have the techno smarts to list the differences Maybe someone with more smarts in electronics will chime in. I just know that I did a lot of research before buying my machine. Everything I read kept saying that the Gecko was the only way to go.

    CNC Newby Help

Another option Instead of upgrading the older MicroMill 2000 controller, I'd look at replacing it with a Gecko 540 controller. I don't know what they quoted you for the upgrade, but I'm guessing the cost of a new (4 axis) Gecko 540 controller would be comparable. I bought my whole Taig CNC...

    Help with Dust Collector Setup?

Don't lose hope. Yeah, it is a little disheartening to read some of his stuff, but he does offer lesser solutions that won't break the bank. I don't know if you followed this link from the page I put in my last post, but take a look here too...

    Sharpening Tool Bits

Sharpening lathe tools If you're going to make your own tools from blanks, you really need a bench grinder. If you plan to buy pre-made tools and just need to "put the edge back on them", you can use a honing/sharpening stone. I've even used my belt sander on occasion to sharpen my tools.

    Help with Dust Collector Setup?

If you're serious about dust collection..... .....start here. Mr. Pentz has compiled a ton of information on the hazards created by shop dust and methods of dust collection. http://billpentz.com/woodworking/Cyclone/Index.cfm

    Dust collector canister filter

Thanks for the link. I can pretty much tell when to clean the filter based on reduced suction. I was more interested in knowing when I need to replace the filter. I found this section covered that subject. I think I'll be looking at adding a pressure gauge to my dust collector. From Bill...

using the correct sealer with the water based finishes

Need more I appreciate your input, but I found that info in my web searches and it left me a little cold. What I was looking for are the implications of the two designations in the context of finishes. For example, would there be significant differences between products that are described as...

using the correct sealer with the water based finishes

I just checked it out. I compared the products on the Greenlight site with the VTCoatings site and they appear to be the same thing. The only product that I would consider trying is the non-yellowing aliphatic urethane topcoat. One the VTCoatings site, they call it VanAqua-485. On the...

using the correct sealer with the water based finishes

Enduro Pre-Cat It may be something unique to the Pre-Cat topcoat. I use the Enduro Clear Poly. They do say to avoid using oil base stains under it, but they don't have a cautionary statement about the sanding sealer like on the Pre-Cat. I'd contact Jeff Jewitt at Homestead Finishing Products...

    dust collecter cabinets

A Hightower, but not the Deluxe I built an enclosure for my Mid-Size from some scrap wood I had laying around and some plexiglas I got at Lowe's. I use a flap of thin plastic on the front that keeps a draft going to the dust collector, but still allows me to reach inside when I need to.

carguy, your PM box is full I just tried to reply to your latest PM, but your inbox was full. You didn't mention anything about payment in your last PM and I feel that I need to do something to repay your kindness. If you won't take money, maybe there's something that you need that I could...
