My idea is similar, but without removing any balls. Opponent can shoot the 8 with x number of balls on the table. I wouldn't do more than two, as they can block pockets or be part of a cluster.

Previous year player winnings on the home page confirms that it is per player.

When someone executes a lockup safety, and another says "nice shot", I like to correct them by saying it was a good shot, nothing nice about it.
