Tipping TD

Is this the right thing to do, and if so what % of the winnings should one tip???

It is very common out here in Az. It is pretty much "expected" because it has been a thing for so long.

Usually 5%-10%

Aren't most tournament directors paid some by the venue, or from the tourney fees?

I guess it could depend on whether the TD is volunteering their own time and is not getting paid for their efforts, versus the TD being an employee or proprietor of the poolroom hosting the tournament.

I'm afraid I could see this as potentially leading to a conflict of interest, in regards to a TD remaining completely neutral in running the tournament, if by chance certain players in the tournament field are known to the TD as being good tippers if they win.

I have never done it, or seen it done.

I get tipped occasionally. Mostly just get thank yous for a well ran tournament though.

The players who usually win are only playing for the money so they rarely want to give any of it back.

I do not run the tournament for the money as there basically is none. You are doing it do it when making $5 an hour to heard cats. LOL

If I get 1st or 2nd in a tournament I give the TD about 10%, no more.

When I run tournaments, I don’t expect anything. A tip is a courtesy.

You’d be surprised - some people never tip, and some go overboard and tip like 30%. It evens out.

I wouldn't tip a tournament director a dime. He's getting his somewhere...bet on that.
Why not tip the power company for providing the electricity? or the person who installed the tables? or the attorneys who see that "nobody can touch us on anything?"...it could go on and on.
Those hard working waitresses who have to hustle those drinks and food and put up with some pool room bum hitting on them are the ones who deserve tips...and good tips too. And also maybe the poor devil who has to clean the bathrooms just to pick up some money to get by.
The bartenders themselves deserve no tips......typically they're stealing the owner blind anyway.
Just my cynical opinion of human nature as usual. Not posted as a guideline to be chiseled in stone or cause a fight.
Life goes on.

I’ve seen small tournaments run in bars by pure volunteers that I’m sure don’t take a cut. I would tip those now that this thread awoke me to the idea.

I’ve seen big tournaments where the TD is the organizer and the whole affair is a business venture with them taking their own cut whether from the prize funds or the green fees. I wouldn’t tip there.

Tip a Tournament Director? On the East Coast, the TD will take in $100 each from 64 players and then claim the full payout of all entry fees is $4,500. "Which is every dime we took in."

Ive seen this sporadically over the years. My feeling is that unless the tournament director came to the table and made some of the shots for me, why would I tip them? Its not like they were bringing me drink refills. :duck:

I think its just a bleed over from the gambling world to flip a little jelly to whoever helped you make a score.

I got tipped off to a tournament one time in the small rural Alaskan town of Anchor Point. It was called the Snow Rondy tournament, basically a spin off of the Fur Rondy that goes on for the Iditarod every year. This particular year was dedicated to a local player who had been killed in a car crash.

It was a $50 entry, full 64 player bracket, double elimination race to 1, bar rules 8 ball tournament. I missed the calcutta the night before, so I wasnt given the option to buy half. As it went, I ran through the field and won it.

When the thing was over, I did give the guy who told me about the tourney a jelly roll and was pretty damned happy with my score. That was until I learned how much was in the calcutta....... Apparently there was some money in town who thought a couple of the locals played like god.

I ran a few small tournaments for a local bar about 30 years ago. Owner paid my entry fee and provided free food and beverages. That was enough for me.

Tip 'em, hell yes, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna tip the TD, scorekeeper, bartender, waitress, bar back, my opponents, and the guy that rode with me. If I have any $ left I'll figure out somebody else to tip! lol
