Considering price as well as playability, I love the old C&D series Mcdermott's. The C series tends to be more money than a D series cue, but you can find nice D series cues for a few hundred and under if you're not worried about fancy designs. Ebay usually has many for sale at reasonable prices.

I second Bierbower. I haven't shot with one, so take my opinion as a grain of salt, but I hope to have him build me one at some point. He's a very old school accomplished player, steel joints, and has the classic look down. I hear his cues play very well.
