Digging up an old post: The Hustler, and the Mental Game

This is an interesting way to think about it. All the pressure of winning takes its toll; you're like a marked target at that point. I think you're right -- the ones who always rise to the top do it not on talent alone, but by being able to withstand the heat and the constant pressure of not...

    Congrats Steve Lipsky

Congrads to Steve! I was playing Gina's team at ABC (league), and she was so nervous the entire night... endless txting and updates all night. But it looks like it was all worth it!

Digging up an old post: The Hustler, and the Mental Game

Best line to think about is: Bert ignored this. "You lost your head and grabbed the easy way out. I bet you had fun, losing your head. It's always nice to feel the risks fall off your back. And winning; that can be heavy on your back, too, like a monkey. You drop that load too when you find...

Digging up an old post: The Hustler, and the Mental Game

Reposting something that I've needed for a while. Enjoy: Here's a brief excerpt from Walter Tevis's "The Hustler." For any of you with the paperback version by Thunder's Mouth Press, it's pages 89 - 97. These pages are the best in the entire book The Hustler, in my opinion. This hit the nail...

reduce the luck factor in 9 ball...

As much as I hate to admit it, you're right. I absolutely can't stand when someone misses a ball so badly that they leave me hooked behind a ball, but to take away 2-way shots would alter the game too much. As far as the 9 on the break, it makes little difference to me. It happens so rarely...

    AZB King!

Love the idea, but there have to be some constraints on what games are played and who chooses them. There's something appealing about giving the challenger the option of games, but there can be some pretty esoteric and silly games that can come up. I can just imagine someone proposing...

    Another Aiming Method

I local shortstop taught me a similar method for very difficult, long-distance cut shots (e.g. cueball in the jaws of a pocket, object ball on the spot). It's quite effective with minimal practice, and with a decent amount of practice you'll be scaring your opponents in no time!

When John Schmidt Was an "Unknown"

John- I'm curious at what point you started playing world-class 14.1. Was it when you started with Bobby Hunter? Also, how was your 9-ball game when you started the insanely high runs in 14.1? Were you playing pro-speed 9-ball at that point? Also, did you get more action playing 9-ball or...

How long do you think the 10 ahead will take?

Course, this is Johnny Archer we're talking about. Any match with him can take 20 hours if there's enough lint on the table.

pool's greatest one liners & quotes

There's a local here who always yells out (when a fortunate rolls comes his or his opponent's way), "The luck Factor!!!!" Well I'm playing a mutual friend of ours, and one night I'm getting all the rolls. He says, "You not only have the luck factor, you have the luck factory!"

    What is this???

Kevin Trudeau is working on a similar book: "Secret Hustling Techniques They Don't Want You To Know About."

    Help with this shot

Looks like a slight jacked up low-right punch shot. Only possible on brand new cloth. The right spin helps to check the cue off the rail, while the draw arcs it back once it hits that first rail. The slight angle of the cue (somewhat jacked up) makes the cue ball hop, so that the draw...

    Why use a long bridge?

Interestingly though, Pagulayan's stroke is actually pretty short. His bridge is long, but you'll notice that the tip doesn't come nearly as close to how Busta and Efren nearly pull the ferrule to their bridge hand.

I am officially calling out STEVEKUR1

Well if you end up securing an undercard at the US Open, maybe it'll be enough time to save up a few dimes. Either way, doesn't matter to me. If a thousand is all you two can afford, I'd watch regardless of whether it was 1K or 5K. I just want to see this spectacle live on TAR!

I am officially calling out STEVEKUR1

Wait, you post a challenge in a public forum and then ask for a backer? This is the most backwards logic I've read in a long time (and that says a lot!).

I am officially calling out STEVEKUR1

This thread is getting too good too fast... is this fake? Is this staged? I'll be disappointed if it is.
