who me?
Take lessons

My friend Jack asked me to come to Temple,he said
he could teach me.
When I got there Jack had become an old man,he thought I was the old man
He tried to show me how to play straight pool but got frustrated because I
shoot too quick, can't control the cue ball, make long shots or see patterns

He finally said my problem had nothing to do with straight pool,
my problem was pool period.
Jack said his memory wasn't as good as it used to be,but he remembered
that I wasn't very good but now I was terrible

Jack then raised his two fingers in the old cub scout fashion and swore
he would never bet on me even if I got the nuts.

He went so far as to give me advice that he would give me if I were
his brother, which was "Quit now, because no one could possibly be of any help.

He said I should not waste my time seeing Ray Martin (my long time dream,
I had always admired Ray and I was sure that he was the greatest living player at least at one time)

Jack agreed but said I would need Houdini, that Ray Martin would never
survive the lessons.

He did close on a positive note,he said that he appreciated all the money I had won for him over the years, something about how well I held up for big money when I had the Hungarian nuts.

I thanked him for the good advice and friendship, I felt compelled to ask if
he was serious about never betting on me again. He put his right hand on his left breast and said something about a cardiologist.

To his credit ,he did ask if i would consider staking someone who
could make a ball. I asked if he knew such a person and he had to think before his parting words"I used to "

So in answer to the question,am I going to take lessons?
No,I am beyond help

Ah come on man.....sometimes things are so bad they only get better. However I took music lessons. My teacher dubbed me Mr. Pitifull and suggested I save my parents money. That was that.

Anyway if you are ever going to take lessons.... DelRay Beach is the place. Learn to play the drum correctly. TomTom is your guy.

Dean - *I* heard you're the best player, hands down, in your own home. By far. Not even close, it's said. You're denying that? And if so, why? Laying down for a bigger bet? For more weight? Just enjoy pulling our legs? FESS UP.

Frank...You know better! Just as you needed to improve the quality and accuracy of your stroke, before Tom could help you play better one pocket...Dean has the same issues. He should be seeing randyg in Dallas, long before wasting his time and money with Tom in FL...but that won't happen.

Based on what Dean described...I see an influx of picture-less cues for sale in the not too distant future.

pictureless cues soon

unfortunately i have a bunch ordered too

and besides that i might continue playing poorly

Stan is probably right ,I have intended to see Randy several times but
I just waited too long

on the other side Thhe Tom wirth lesson have been super helpful because they
deal with the strategy, true i could benefit more if i could bank better and shoot straighter but at one pocket i still win a lot of times

I can beat people at one pocket who give me the 5 and break at 9 ball
unless they watch tom wirth i will continue supplementing my retirement income
with a little one pocket here and there

Scott, I do teach stroke and fundamentals but I agree that Randy is the guy Dean should see first. I would very much like to work with Dean. I know we would have a great teacher/student relationship and he would learn a lot about One Pocket but if his cueing skills were stronger he would benefit far more from my strategic instruction.

The door is open to the rest of you. If interested in my One Pocket instructions just contact me here and we can get the ball rolling.

An action match is much more likely than lessons

Tom Wirth,I have already improved by watching your videos and reading the book

Please don't make me get cuing skills,Jack potter developed those kinda skills and 2 things happened
1..everybody admired his new stroke and ball playing abilities

2 No body wanted to play him for money

Pool is a game where good players don't get action

Have mercy on me oh guru of the 'pocket apiece"
oh mighty Iatola of one hola don't do this to me

We both know people my age don't get a stroke or know how to use it

All I want is cunning and strategy, sneaky skills of the inner circle,

I want to approach the table thinking offense let the other guy worry about balls in front of my hole

Please Tom,I n bought everything, now I need personal guidance to the next level

In the mean while I am becoming a dog because straight pool is revealing my weaknesses

Normally this wouldn't bother me but my opponent wants to play for $1000 pr game or more

and all I see is practice pool, i found myself talking to myself when I was playing straight pool

It said "don't dog this ball in the side pocket"

I replied to myself"don't talk while I am shooting"

No joke, 14:1 is driving me nuts

I had not played side pockets in 20 years

What got me started?

Totally agree with you. No question about Dean seeing you or Randy. I was definitely off topic when posting. And correct I would not be at Toms without your help. And I thank you ..... regardless of my level I’m playing better than ever and the fun never stops. You and Tom are the best thing that happened to my pool playing. Without proper stroke training there is no phase 2.
I was pushing Dean to see Tom for theory/strategy. If he came to Florida I’d get a chance to play him a Nickel a ball and buy him lunch. Was not suggesting he see Tom for stroke instruction. You are Randy are the ones.

I stand corrected. I should have said "get the ball rolling....all the way to the bottom of the hole".

Dean and straight pool like peas and carrots

Dean told me and posted on here about playing some guy straight
pool for $400 a game going to 30. He said neither one of them ran 6 balls,
and he WON. He said he wanted to learn to play and was thinking about
getting with Ray Martin. Well you just couldn't do any better than that. He
doesn't do anything about instructions, just says if I could just learn the
basics I could easily win that game. I tell him I'm no world champion
or Ray Martin by a long shot but I used to play it pretty good, I've run over
a hundred more than a few times, come down I'm sure I can help.
We get to the table, he sets up that classic break shot, scatters the
balls all over place and starts shooting them bang, bang. After they're
all gone he says "see no way to break them with this shot, this is the,
way it always ends up on the last ball". WHAT ARE YOU TALKING
ABOUT you had a least 3 or 4 good break balls, you shot them off.
He says I'm just unlucky at this game never get a good break ball.
Uh,uh,uh, lets do it again, Okay these are your trouble balls, they
are tied up so you need to address them ear-- "I'll just leave them alone
that way, when I miss he'll have to figure out what to do with them.
Uh uh let me show you how to play some safety"s off of a full rack
I'm sure that comes up quite often. I ask "you and this guy play about
the same ?" he says yeah, he shoots straighter but I play a lot
smarter, you want in next time we play" Oh that's Pam calling
dinner's ready I'll get back to you. He's all yours Ray good luck.

It is sad to see jack has no faith in his old pard
He is still talking about the same stuff when we were trying to learn

He always thought it was important to make shots, sink balls and play safe
when I ignored those few things he calls basics it makes him nervous

He tends to get an upset stomach

I have tried over and again to tell him that sometimes the important thing is to play high and wait for the other guy to dog it,there is more than 1 way to skin a cat

I usually try to get enough weight to give me an edge, but playing a guy even is really difficult

One pocket is slower and you only need to make 8 balls ever hour or so,that is the pace I prefer

Again I thank jack for all the complicated advice, but i am afraid it is for pool players,
not guys like me

Perhaps you guys can help jack see the benefits of betting on the side, perhaps if he didn't have to watch the game it would be easier

I hate for Jack to miss out on this big score.

Jack will tell you that I have won big before,so what's the problem now?
