Reyes-Bustamante 8-ball safety battle

A recent thread resulted in a spirited debate about playing safeties in 8-ball.

I thought you might enjoy watching this rack between Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante that resulted in a very rare safety battle. Personally, I think professional 8-ball is boring...but this match was more like "one-pocket 8-ball."

Thank goodness Billy Incardona was in the commentary booth and could make sense of the rack for me.

It's in two parts (maybe it was before youtube did away with its 10-minute limitation?)

thanks for the post, got my lunch video for the day

A great reason to watch games like this is that from watching and listening to the commentary, you can pick up something new to try at the table. Don't even need to be at a table to learn/practice all the time. Most of the "practice" I get is from videos since I only play a few hours on the table a week, but I still feel like I am getting better from understanding certain shots or spins.

Shame Bustamante missed that key ball. He was out. Efren was smart not to shoot that 3 ball until he needed it. Great rack.

Not that people don't already know but we get a another glimpse as to just how smart Efren plays. Thanks for the post.

So true, but I think Efren and Busty sized up the situation equally and played "the table."

Efren just got lucky :D

I don't think I've ever seen another 8-ball match quite like that one. It's like that Schmidt-Frost one pocket match where they both owe 7-8 balls before a ball is even made!

Bustamante tried break laws of physics. Cue ball could not hit the cluster if he made the ball. Angle was way too much.

I would say it was borderline. Very difficult, but not impossible. Clearly, Bustamante looked at it and thought it was in the realm of possibility, or he wouldn't have even tried. He didn't miss by much. And that was hitting it entirely solid. It would have been fine even if he had just clipped the 5.

Funny, I had to play an 8ball match like that once in a bar tournament...against a one pocket player. LOL

There was another epic safety battle in 8 Ball in a TAR match between Schmidt and Deuel. I tried to find it but don't believe it's available as it was PPV. It was a truly great 40+ minute game though.

There you have it. Playing safe when you have makeable shots is for (1) sissies and (2) magicians.

Thanks

I agree with tony, efern moves his cue ball better than anyone in the world; as we know it.

Yeppers......Plus like Billy said, he already had the shape for the breakout with the nine ball shot, poor shot choice is all.
