In some of the recent posts I, and Jay Helfert, have referred to a number of tournament and players that frequented Sacramento's Jointed Cue in the 60' and 70s, even into the 80's. For fun and perhaps memories............

This very young skinny blonde haired player was the last person a stranger from the East Coast wanted to see across the table.......

but you would recognize these guys without a problem...

If your from Arizona now, you might know this talented player that lived here then....

And if you could find anyone to play, well there's always Richie....

Enjoy

Who is the player in AZ now? I have a guess in mind but I don't want to offend anyone if I'm wrong. ;)

I recognize Cole but I'm not sure who that is holding the rack, playing against Louie.

Edit: Never mind. I saved the image because I was sure it was him and the file name of the image confirmed it. I'm not certain, but I think he might be playing with the same cue today.

Deadon,

Thanks for sharing the great pictures. There's a lot of pool history in those photos.

Were all these images taken at a tournament? If so, that was a pretty tough tournament (and who won?).

There were several touranments, I'll try and put together the brackets and let you see who played. Tough isn't the word. I didn't include dozens of top players. I post them later.

Heck, I didn't even post the pix of Rempe, Mike "the mouth", Johnny Ervelino, Ronnie Allen, Dennis Searcy, Luther Lassiter, Keith M., Buddy Hall, and many many more. With the possible exception of Lassiter, these guys were in their prime.

The current Az player is a young Terry Osborn. He lived in the area and frequented the Jointed Cue.

This tournament has been going on for 38 years. The next annual tournament will be March 17/18 and will draw 90 to 100 players just like it has for all these years. It is now the Terry Stonier Memorial Tournament, run by his son David, and with the same tournament directors that have been there for years. Great photos that bring back lots of memories. I will be there to donate and eat my share of their famous cheeseburgers. John Henderson

If any are interested in playing in it, the information and contact is posted on a thread in the Tournament section - think it is "38 Reunion---". I would imagine if John Henderson is going there will be some big names hanging around. And of course there are the "cheese" burgers.

For those of us who may not recognize all of the faces.. Could you please post the names of the players. Some I can tell, others, I have no idea??

Peace, Joe

If you look at the properties of the images (right click?) you get a clue from the filenames. But I think they're:

Cole Dickson
Louie Roberts (racker w/Louie?)
Larry Hubbart
Terry Osborne
Richie Florence
Roy Futternick
Kim Davenport
Jimmy Mataya
"Billy" Ray Suden
Tony Annigoni

The tournament site looks like it was at one of the non-Jointed-Cue venues like the El Rancho Motel or the Senator Hotel. If I had to guess, around 1978.

In the picture of Terry, there is a gentleman (thin, balding, white hair) sitting to the very right - his name is Bill Amadao (sp). He was a good player in his own right.

Most all of these were at Terry's tournament at the El Rancho Hotel in W. Sacramento.

Second picture is Harold Lyons (player bending over the table) - he is a lifetime resident of the state of Nevada.

You sure about that? The only Harold Lyons in the Nevada DOC database is on parole.

Heh heh.. One of the convictions is "Cheating at Gambling"...

NO! Say it ain't so! A pool player? Cheating? At gambling?

Whoever heard o' such a thing? :D

And in the background is Tony Annigoni, Ray Felipe and Cole. I believe thats also Bill Stroud behind Harold.

Ray Felipe actually lead the Filipino invasion. He was a world class billiard player and deadly 9 ball player in the 50s and early 60s. A wonderful guy and friend who is now gone.
