★ Mosconi Cup ★ Absolutely Spectacular ★

I haven't really wanted to say anything about the Mosconi Cup because I was/am embarrassed not just about the performance of our nations representatives (which I could forgive... eventually). It was the solid endorsement of how the world expects Americans to behave. This really angers me.

I was in eastern Africa as part of the whole nastiness that happened there in the early 90's. I had my own preconceptions atomized as the character and supreme dignity of the people from that region plainly demonstrated to me that they deserved my respect.

From those that have so little to those that have so much... we deserve the stereotype that exists for a reason. I think every American and person selected to represent America should consider how important it is now (more than ever), how we comport ourselves as people / competitors.

People like Mr. Balsis in 1966 sitting down after an 11 ball run, watching Irving Crane crush him into the ground 150 and out. Balsis enjoyed the Deacons skill and achievement as much as any assembled, congratulating Irving at the end of that historic run.

We seem to have lost something. I do wish we could FIND it...

Regards,

Lesh

This is precisely what I am talking about. The MC was emotion and thought provoking. Good post. The Mosconi Cup mattered.

The Mosconi Cup is one of my favorite events but I sure wouldn't put this year's match up there for suspense, competitiveness, or sportsmanship.

And I don't agree with the OP's assertion it is the most prestigious event in pool. To me that means the event that carries the most honor to win because of it's stature, strength of field, and difficulty to win. Sorry, but as much as I enjoy the Cup it has none of those things.

Dear Jay--

I wasn't aware that the Ryder Cup ratings were so high. The only reasons I watch it are that I enjoy match play in golf and I like Ian Poulter, and he always shines in that contest.

We are on the same page about Dennis Orcollo and Efren Reyes. My point was that it is commendable in golf and cue sports that we don't think very much about where a player comes from. The MC asks us to forget that virtue and be jingoistic.

we were outplayed

we were outclassed

we were outcoached

and after it was all over, we were outdrank

damn those euros

these were the 'thoughts that were provoked' in me.

was MC "absolutely spectacular"?

not from where I sat. Unless you mean in the same way a train wreck can be.

MC was a sad joke at best for Americans. Our team didn't show up. It was hard to even find a good reliable place to watch it. The format with that break was boring as hell for the average pool player, let alone someone who doesn't follow at all.

Musconi Cup is dead in my eyes. I will not be watching at all next year. I would rather pay $45 and watch a GOOD MATCH on TAR, then watch that cluster F**K for free.

All the best,

Let me jump in here,

1. Using your own examples, golf and tennis are essentially "singles" events and yet the Ryder Cup and the Davis Cup are very important events in their respective sports.

2. The Davis Cup draws big audiences depending on which teams are playing. Remember it lasts for months and has many hours of television coverage, both nationally and internationally. All this culminates in a final match with worldwide interest by tennis fans everywhere. I doubt the ratings are as high as Wimbleton or the U.S. Open, but may well be higher than most other tennis tournaments. The Ryder Cup is a whole different story. It's always one of the highest rated golf shows of the year when it's played. It's a one shot deal, consisting of only four days of play.

3. Darren Appleton and Dennis Orcollo seem to be pretty popular all over the globe, or hadn't you noticed. Top pool players get acclaim wherever they go. Shane gets star treatment in the Philippines! So does Mika. Wherever pool is played, the top players are admired and respected, with one or two exceptions. Efren is BELOVED all over the world! He may be more popular in the pool world than Sergio Garcia is in the golf world. JMHO as always

I've just been reading this thread and when I came upon Jim Wych's post it was great reading his views and opinion. I think a lot of Jim and I've always enjoyed his commentary. Jay, your this post is right on the money and you couldn't have said it better.

James

I have been reading a lot of reactions on a lot of Mosconi topics. Although there are many Americans that are coming up with fair suggestions on how to proceed in the future, there are also many who suddenly say the MC is a farce and I'm not attending or watching it again.
To the latter I would like to say, stop being sore losers! I don't believe you would say that if you would have won. And 10 years ago when Europe was losing we didn't whine and complain about every little thing.

So just regroup and prepare for the next cup!

no sh1t. it's been a week & we're still trying to sober up!

my other post about the fans in the stands (i wish yáll could have heard us), was about how WE/US showed up in huge numbers & actually dominated EURO as fans. (we didn't do this 2 yrs ago & it was embarrassing.)

so no excuses for Team USA, via us/US.

we still need to watch the YouTubes, so that we can see what yáll saw/heard. but i can tell you, that on Day Fricken 1, i was sitting front row center & right there, and i kept saying to KK9:

SERIOUSLY?!?! even I could have made that shot!

the Euros had HEART. from the consistent unison @ ring-side w/ the GFs & Johan, to their fans. THEY PLAYED TO WIN. and bring The Cup HOME. or deal w/ Europe's fans' discontent....

and when it was all over @ Day 2.5, the Euros shook our hands. we all kissed & made up. (except for the MANY US fans who disappeared ASAP to sulk) and said: GOOD GAME/WELL DONE - SEE YOU IN 12 MONTHS. and the Euros went down ring-side & shook the US Players hands, too.

and then we all (Euros, Hatch, & select AZBers) celebrated @ Beatles!

cause that's just what they do. they COMPETE hard. and then they CELEBRATE TOGETHER - win or lose. next?

PL <---- 25 yrs of rugby helps me understand their ways.
