A Facebook seller is selling about 80 McDermott cues and some others from his friend’s late father who was a McDermott dealer. These appear to be mostly new cues from between 2006 to 2014. Most prices appear to be the sale price originally tagged on the cues. How good of a deal is it eleven to nineteen years later?

Its cash only, no shipping, and must be picked up from seller’s home in Midland, Michigan . . . .

This is not the best method for selling 80 McDermott cues. I will be in Michigan in October --- will they be available then? My guess is that prices will drop a lot after several months and, depending on the seller's patience, a liquidator will buy all that remains.
My guess is not a lot of people will travel to Michigan to pay cash only for MSRP from a secondary market that has no McDermott lifetime warranty.

YMMV

people always try to hit the rainbow. but after a time reality sets in.
and if they wait until things go cold and they get desperate, then they get punished.
and rightly so.

ask too much early on and your best market goes away and doesn't come back.

Its a logarithmic scale.

buttload * 10 = 1 butt ton

butt ton * 10 = 1 assload

assload * 10 = 1 asston

asston * 10 = 1 shitload

shitload * 10 = 1 shitton

shitton * 10 = 1 fuckload

fuckload * 10 = 1 fuckton

So 1 fuckton = 10^3 shitloads = 10^ 7 buttloads
my bad. this new math...

How good are the prices?

Some prices are MSRPs from eleven to nineteen years ago, are new cues, and some of those prices are now nice. Some other prices are a little higher than that on the price tag from years ago. The seller has been careful at pricing. Even with the lower prices, it still can be difficult to sell a lot of cues that require pickup in Midland MI.

McDermott’s Cues of the Year sell on their website now in 2023 and 2024 models between $3000 and $5000 versus the Facebook seller’s new cues from 2013 and 2014 between $1400 and $2000 (2013 G1304 at $1399, 2013 G1305 at $1399, and 2014 G1908 at $1999).

Limited Edition cues sell now between $1300 and $15,000 versus Facebook seller’s between $450 and $2000. The $2000 cue is also a Cue of the Year (G1908) is impressive and presumably would be in the top tier of Limited Edition cues today. Hmmm, the $2000 G1908 may be OK.

Star cues sell today between $215 and $375 versus Facebook seller’s $160 to $200.

Worth original wholesale less 30%. Why buy no warranty old cues that might have problems when dealers can buy new cues from McDermott with a warranty at wholesale ? and a dealer is the guy to buy these.

@Paul_#_ How will this end? Well, I still have 5 cues in stock, but I've unloaded 150 cues & loose shafts, a few dozen cases, and 200+ balls over the past 9 months. I've collected $38,000+ in that time, $22k of that being direct/in-person sales, the rest via eBay (fees and shipping took about $5k). I expect the few I have left to pull in at least another $2000.

I noticed this thread over the summer but didn't get around to registering here until now to post some feedback. I spent weeks painfully researching pricing for these before posting them, so I am hoping this update can help the community valuate their similar lumber.

The year started off with about ten dealers making $10,000 offers on the whole lot. Most scoffed when I respectfully declined. I knew nothing about pool cues and while I grew up with a Valley table at home, I never played much and still don't. I almost felt bad when folks stopped by to look at my inventory, knowing I didn't appreciate it nearly as much as they did.

I got in contact with McDermott pretty early on and started sending cues that showed signs of wear back for them to clean up. Let me add here, that their customer service is top notch. I'm no authorized dealer, but they treated me like one from day one. They were happy to formally agree to honor all originally implied warranties to all of my buyers (for new items), contrary to what's been mentioned in this thread. They replaced a ton of dry rotted bumpers, dried out tips, and completely rebuilt a handful of shafts before returning them to me.

Pricing waivered throughout the year. Lakeman77 is pretty close about landing 30% shy of sticker on average (for new). The owner insisted the handful of used cues we had should land around original sticker, and in some cases that was true, but most cases they fell short. Our new inventory held stronger, but definitely had some cues that people were just not interested in no matter their original sticker price.

It took a lot more work, but not offering shipping for the first 4-5 months of selling probably saved us $8-10k in fees. Plus, even with great photos and crystal clear descriptions, we ran into trouble on eBay with some buyers not being satisfied. I had zero issues with in person (+ a handful of PayPal friends and family via FB marketplace) buyers. I would take the same approach I took if i had to do this all over again - gosh those eBay fees are rough.

Anyway, onto the data, I'll spare you details on cases/balls/accessories, but here is how the cues fared. If anyone is interested in photos, let me know and I can shoot you a link to my website that has them all cataloged. If anyone is interested in the few that don't have sale prices listed, look on eBay - 3 of them are there, the other two are currently pending.

EDIT: I seem to be running into issues pasting my spreadsheet here, and it doesnt like me attaching excel documents. For now I'll attach a PDF until i can figure out a more reliable/helpful way to post the text here.
