1 ball in the side on the break, over and over again

I am just a noob, but I was working with my mentor and he was showing me how to make the one ball on the break in a 9-ball match. The first two tries I made the one ball in the side pocket. After that it was maybe one out of three times I could make it.

I feel if Ko was missing balls at the 4” pockets, losing push outs, losing safety battles and not making his jump shots then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Because those things would have brought his opponents to the table to do damage against him.

Even with the one going in, control of the cue ball and the first shot was pretty random. Maybe I missed it but I don't think anyone was playing intentional position on the two ball other than hoping to get the cue ball to the center of the table.

This is the crux of the matter. This break rule has had the desired effect, as the reward for making a ball on the break has been reduced. There is, just as Matchroom wanted, more back and forth play. I don't see the new break rule used by Matchroom as a problem at all.

At Large has noted that there was just one four pack in the US Open and just five three packs in the streamed matches over six days. Those are awfully low numbers. Players aren't stringing racks much anymore.

Next: mandatory 1/4 inch between each ball. New racks made for it too.

They already exist. You can consistently make balls with even that gappy of a rack if it's consistent.
