1-pocket in Asia?

It occurred to me while watching (highlights of) the Wu-Alcano match from WPC yesterday that it would be really cool to see some of the young heavyweights from the Philippines and Taiwan playing 1-pocket.

Is 1-pocket played at all over there? Given that Efren is probably the best 1-pocket player ever, has the game caught on much in the Philippines? What about Taiwan or other Asian nations?

Some really incredible 1-pocket could come out of Asia if those guys spent a little time learning the game (if they haven't already). They are taking 9-ball to a new level (IMO), but 1-pocket is more open-ended and creative (also IMO), so it would be fascinating to see what Wu, Yang, Alcano, Orcollo & company would do with 1-pocket. Particularly with the different styles that seem to be developing, I think that whole new dimensions to the game would emerge.

There was a 1 Pocket tournament in Bangkok in November. I was there but didn't go. The game puts me to sleep.

i know about 3 years ago when i was in taiwan not that many people played it, i had to explain the game like straight pool, but just shooting in one hole. then again that was 3 years ago. i'd have to say that by now it's a more popular game

Surprisingly, even in the Philipines (Efren's home), One Pocket is not very popular, and rarely played. They just seem to prefer Rotation games either 9-Ball, Ten Ball or full rack Rotation.

In Taiwan, the popular games are 9-ball and straight pool. In any pool hall you always see people playing these two games.
It would be a surprise to see people playing 8-ball, let alone one pocket.
The reason, I think, is that straight pool is a good game for beginner and 9-ball is the pool game shown in Taiwan tv all day all year.

No 1 hole here in Japan either. As a matter of fact, although I don't consider myself a 1 hole player, playing several pros here in Japan heads up in one pocket tends to be a good handicap for me. They're not familiar with the game but have more talent, and I'm not as talented but slightly more familiar with the game so things often end up pretty even until they start to learn the game. Once they learn the game however, it's time for me to move on or get some weight.

the 1 pocket game involves a tremendous amount of skills (cueball control primarily), pattern plays or shot selection and patience. it is easy to learn but difficult to play. it is the equivalent of chess! since most money games are played per game,it means that the best possible way to earn and maximize the winnings is thru a fast game of nine-ball and straight pool. that kind of earning cannot be achieved in playing one pocket unless they raise the stakes from the beginning of the match. let's say $1,000 per game in 5 or 10.

In Taiwan, there are three sport channels: Videoland, espn, and starsport. Each day, there is at least one pool or snooker, of
course some are rerun programs. For example, today 22-Feb-07 in Starsport
0900-1000 2006 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS semifinal#1
1000-1100 2006 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS semifinal#2
1100-1200 2006 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS final

Lucky Taiwanese.

Asian even can watch US open, BCA open, Mosconi Cup, WPBA tours, and most WPA tours etc. on TV. (in taiwan, only men&women wpc, asian tours, super cup and taiwan men&women tours are LIVE). It is also why 9-ball is so popular in asia these years.
