10 ball break second row

I've been unable to figure out the 10 ball break. It seems on my diamond the second row always goes above the side pocket with the magic rack. The only way I can get the second row to go in the side pocket is with a medium break with draw. With a hard break and a square hit on the one ball the second row almost always goes high.

I've watched the SVB break video and Joe Tucker's Racking Secrets. But I still seem to be missing something.

So how do you adjust how high the second row goes, assuming a tight rack?

Cueball placement away from center 2nd row goes lower, More towards the center 2nd row goes higher
Softer break-lower, harder-higher
Draw-lower, follow-higher
Less hop-lower, more hop-higher

Also it seems like a minor cut and sidespin can affect how high the second row goes.

So what's wrong with a medium break with draw? If it works, use it? I break 10ball (with a magic rack) fairly soft. Both 2nd balls go towards the pocket and I get a nice spread.

your assumptions that the more you go off center, the lower second balls go is basically correct. But not both 2nd row balls react absolutely the same since you hit the 1 ball a little from the side, obviously.

So start with your standard break point and standard speed. Then observe which one of the 2nd row balls goes closer to its respective side pocket. Then adjust according to your assumptions and make sure they don't cancel each other out.

I'd love to be able to break like Shane, Ko Pin Yi and Wu do with a big pop. Like this

I can get the cueball action. But when I do the second row goes about 1/4 to a half diamond high. It doesn't matter how far from center table I place the cueball, the second row still goes high.

Also I think I have it backwards with follow and draw. Draw makes the second row go higher and follow makes it go lower.

It seems like when breaking from the left side a little bit of right english helps.

are you racking the 10 on the 1 ball spot? just kidding... :)

Imo applying spin to the cueball has no effect on the development of the spread rather than the way the cue ball goes after impact. Breaks are hard shots. Hard shots have a very short contact time ball to ball. That reduces the effect of spin to the object ball extremely.

If I understand you correctly, you say that whatever you do, you cannot get either 2nd row ball in the side or low? That should not be the case if table and balls are all set up correctly. If you break from the right side like in 9 ball and break rather soft, don't tell me the right 2nd row ball goes above the side?

interesting topic though. Many people do not focus enough on reading the break on different tables...
