10 Ball Ring Same Saturday at 4PM at Big Dog's Billiards

Thanks Matt, I am certainly down to do some sort of progressive payout type of structure...I just couldnt tell if people would want to play more if the payouts at the top were super high or maybe a lower top prize and pay more people.

We did 450, 250, 100, and 50 for the 850 total purse.

Would people like it more if it was 250,200,150,100,50,40,30,20,10??? That way more than half the field gets payed out...I definitely don't mind doing something like this if that's what the people want. I dont care too much about the payouts, I care that people are playing.

I wanna take a little vote guys. Which payout structure do you like better, the top heavy payouts or lots of smaller cashes???
 
I feel like this, maybe the final 6 should have gotten their money back. So like 5-6th get $50 back, then 4th $75, then 3rd $125, then 2nd $200 and finally $350 for first or something like that.

The problem i think is, i dont think you'll have 17 or more again. So what happens then right ? Of course normally this is a winner take all type of deal.
 
Frost, sounds like a great turnout/tourney you had, nice job! Wish I could have made it. I haven't been out to the poolroom on a Saturday night.....since I've been married (not really my wife's idea of a date night). I still can't believe you managed to get 17, especially with the 6 no-shows you mentioned.
 
Damn Richardson, I would have cashed if I would have done it like that!!!!

I actually think the next one on the 27th will have more people than this one. Almost can guarantee it, I've had about 10 people tell me they will play that weren't there and almost everyone who played this time will be making a return trip.

Like I said before the event and I'll say after the event...I need your guys help. Matt Eddy and Jason and Justin R have given some pretty good insight on ways to improve on the event in relation to the antes and payouts. I do agree more people should cash, I still want the top 2 to really feel like they won some good money though. We gotta work it out with Big Dogs as well for the tourney. I like putting this on...I saw Kirk hitting balls on the big table, he told me he wants to win it next time.

I think Paul Ashmore and Theo Lee splitting the top prize is the best thing that could have happened. They do play good but neither were favorites on anyone's list except mine(I picked Theo to win hahahahaha). I wanna see some people take a shot and go for it, I promise it will be over in 4-6 hours next time...not 8 hours! Thanks guys.
 
Your turn out will definitely tell the tale.

1. - I am not opposed to winner take all, nor heavy top end pay outs, but seriously - that doesn't entice me to play regularly. I'm a donator -- until I win the lottery and can play pool day in and day out - I probably will be a donator. But I am cognizant of that when I enter. I think the more players at my caliber (low) and above you get to play the bigger the purses will be.

I still think that it should be prorated on making 'merges' of tables.

2 - the big table was an equalizer this time -- may not happen every time.

3- Your chip handicapping worked well. Does it need managed now that no A player got higher than 4th? Do people ever move up or down?

4- yes hopefully the big dog can get involved -- seemed like a good turnout of regulars

I told Mikey Henderson he can be a B player from now on, that 10 and out donation is hilarious to me. Other than that, I think everyone is just fine where they are at. I'd say the majority of the new players coming in will be A players for sure. Since I'm not going to allow having A players hurt my tourney, here is the deal. Let me know if people like or dislike this idea.\

If there are 6 A players, they all start on the same table. If there are more A players than that than 6 will start on a table and the extras will be moved there on the first table merge assuming some of them got eliminated. The goal is to keep the B players fairly seperated and keep them playing.

The payouts need to be worked out, on the first table merge, there will be at least 12 people left, too many to pay all them out IMO.
 
My opinion on a few points.

I think the table assignments should be completely random. From what I have heard, nobody dominated, especially not the A players.

I know it has been stated a number of times in the thread, but why charge a green fee for an event that is bringing in players/customers that would not normally be there on a Saturday afternoon? Especially when there is only three tables being used and 5 or 6 players per table? There is not a green fee for any of the other tournaments during the week, is there? I don't understand.

As far as payouts, the top 25% rule is usually a pretty good rule of thumb. Maybe round up a bit since the entry fee is a bit higher. I would lower the entry fee before I started paying out $10, $20 and $30 to the lower finishers.

I look forward to playing in a couple weeks and matching up afterward.

My thought process on this comes from how the Great Southern Billiards Tour does their ring game. They put the top players at the feature table and the other guys at the next table. Then when you combine at the end you have half B players and half A players. Normally works out well. Doesn't matter for our game though because our B's and A's play equally terrible. Not even sure why we are doing A/B players after the game we just played. This is a weird game. I hope someone actually decides to play good next time.

I know it is over ten days away but, who plans on playing on the 27th? It is on my calendar and I am now 100% sure that I will be there. Should be fun, I hope. I don't expect too much from myself though, I haven't played since Midwest, and anyone who saw my face after that weekend knows that any pool playing I did probably doesn't count.

Glad you are coming Mike B., hope you do well. Pet is gonna play this time too if I remember what he said correctly. Jody plans on robbing it. No word on Jason Chance. Gary DeCarlo will be at it this go around. Kirk and Chans are coming back and trying to bring a couple folks with them. Paul Ashmore said it'll take an act of congress for him not to play. I of course will be in the sauce. Jamie Fenton thinks he has the day off and if that's true he wants to play, he was tipsy when he told me that so mark it as 50/50. Phil is gonna play again. Athens will be back at it. I hope Justin plays again after Cashing. CJ said he's gonna give it a whirl this time around. Rick Goulden and Jake are gonna come as well. I think Jason R is joking that he wont play,but maybe he's serious. Theo will be in it. Victor is gonna try to play, he has 1 job scheduled for that day and unless it increases he will be in it. I'm sure we will get some more random players again. Maybe Jon Brown joins in on it. My buddy Jason from Ames and Joe S. are on the maybe list. There are others as well I cant think of off the top of my head. I will close it off at 24 if I need to. I think this is a 24 player max tourney. It will be good guys!
 
Still soliciting for improvement ideas. If I have time to pull some of this info together I'll bring it to Big Dogs tonite and go over it with a couple of folks. If not tonite then on Friday for sure. I need a committee meeting!!!
 
Additional Ring Game Rules

OK here’s the deal with the ring game, I’ve listened to the criticisms and suggestions alike, I have to play tournament director and make final decisions. If this doesn’t work I will go back to the drawing board for sure. I’ve talked to some heavyweights in the industry and people that run tours, also some pros. There is a general theme that seems to be prevailing and we will try this at the next ring game.

First of all, there will be an announcement BEFORE the final games are played on each table that the ante and redraw will be taking place after the completion of that game. In other words no table will automatically stop because the timer for the round runs out. I’ve named this, the Justin Rule. It’s a good rule.

Now onto the redraws and table assignment stuff, please read this carefully and I will not be cryptic in the explanation. Rule is different depending on the number of entries into the ring game.

Anything greater than 18 players we will need 4 tables. If we need 4 tables the players will do a random draw in the beginning of the tournament to determine both their table assignment and shooter order. The highest card goes first and the lowest card goes last. Whenever the ante changes players at a given table will do a redraw for order only(not changing tables yet) with the winner of the last game automatically still breaking. All players will remain at their assigned table and play until either the field reaches 12 total or 2 people on any given table.

At this point we will record chip counts for accuracy sake. Then we will do a blind draw for table assignment and shooter’s order(All winners of last game will flip odd man out for the break and the top of the order, even if all 4 breakers end up at the same table). Now that we are down to two full tables the final table will begin when we reach 6 players, or any table gets down to 2 players. In other words if my table is slow and playing even we have to make it down to 4 players if the other table is down to 2 players and vice versa. We will not play each table down to 3 players and take the final 6 that way. If all the short stacks end up at the same table, then so be it, this is the consequence of random drawing(this is what DSM wants, not me I like a seeded approach at this point as a lot of top players do)

Once we are at the final table another redraw is done for order with the 2 breakers flipping for break and 1st shooter after the break. Order will always change through a redraw at every ante change(~30 mins). Once we reach the final 2 players, WE WILL NOT RACE FOR IT. We will keep doubling the ante every 30 mins. Sidenote after 4 hours of play the ante will be at 64 chips per game, someone will win like this trust me.

If we have greater than 12 players but not over 18 players we will use 3 tables and play at the same tables until we get to 12 players or any given table can stop when they reach 2 players. Then we will combine as above. If we only need 2 tables to start with then rules will start from where we combined to two tables as above.

Ante Schedule is as follows, 1 chip/game for the 1st hour, 2 chips/game for a half hour, the 3 chips/game for another half hour, then 4 chips per game for a half hour, then 8 chips/game for a half hour and it keeps doubling every half hour. Approximate tournament time should be around 5 hours including breaks.

About the breaks they will be 5 mins after each hour of play. If a player chooses to miss a game or turn they forfeit that game or turn and are responsible for paying whatever chips they owe. If you stay on break too long and miss a turn, that’s your fault…smoke faster next time.
