Maybe we should do away with homeruns, hole in ones and hail marys. They really don't take that much work. Not compared to the other ways of winning.

All of those analogies break down when you consider the logic behind spotting the 10 on the break.
To put it simply, everyone's luck factor is pretty equal for a home run, hole-in-one, or Hail Mary. For a pool rack, the dominant portion of this "luck factor" is in the racker's hands whether he knows it or not.
There isn't any perfect solution to the problems with the rack, but rather all you can do is choose the minimally bad solution, which unfortunately is a matter of opinion.
