10mm tip replacement

Trying to install a 10mm tip on a cue. All I have in my supply are 13.5mm LePro and Triangle tips. By the time I get the tip cut down to 10mm, it is as thick as it is wide. The leather seems spongy and soft. I tried cutting some off the end but it still seems soft and spongy.

Would a 'milk dud' work better? Would a layered tip work? Should I just buy a new box of 50 11mm tips and hope I can use them up before they disintergrate? I guess I'd at least have some around next time I see a 10mm tip...every ten years or so .

Thanks...Ken

You want to buy 11mm tips, some 10's are 10.3mm and will clean up if carefully centered.
When you start taking too much off the sides, the tip does become very spongy.
Milkduds are better.

There is something WRONG with the way you are trimming the tip, if it is making it "spongy". Could you tell us what kind of equipment you're using & how you go about this trimming. If you would rather send me this in a PM, that's OK too. HOPE TO HELP...JER

You could try pressing the tip before you install it. Are you using a razor blade to trim the tip down??? You could always ask someone to sell you a few 11mm tips so you dont have an entier box of 50.

How to

I turn the shaft on a TSPB (Todd Schultz) cue lathe. I'm using Lock Tite Jel Superglue to attach tip. Trim with a razor blade. Wax edge and buff, burnish with leather.

I think I am just cutting too much material off the tip itself. I'm ending up at the heart of the leather tip that is almost as thick as it is in diameter. If you think of stacking plates...they're pretty stable to a point, but when the stack gets too high, it gets kinda 'floppy'.

I have been in contact with Neil (conetip) and he is fixing me up with a few 11mm leather tips (thanks Neil). Those should do the trick.

Thanks for all the advise. It would have been trail and error til I got something figured out. Sometimes that works, sometimes it don't. It's great to have such a pool of guys who are so helpful at hand. This Internet thing is going to catch on I think:thumbup:. Lots of info to be shared.

Thanks again...Ken

A fresh razor blade and it helps to keep presure on the tip with your live center while you trim a little at a time.
