12.75 vs 13mm shafts?

Ok, I think some of you retired NASA engineers have a little to much time on your hands. Put the ball in the hole. Repeat.

I learned to shoot pool watching my dad play for $20 a rack between his toes. I have won more than one game with a broom stick. Would someone please do the 'deflection and squirt differential equation' on that?

Oh yes, I'm really upset-- zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Well you gave me a good visual. ha ha ha Old pop drunk on his butt in a bar playing pool between his toes, falling on his butt a few times. You know, I've heard that broom stick routine enough to make me puke. There is always someone riding that band wagon. Hell I've even played with one but it isn't going to be the way I come on a forum.

Sure I have 2 shaft sizes, 1 for any pool table and one for snooker/golf. BTW do something about that stuttering problem, you repeated your self twice.

guys, dont let a good discussion turn out to be another stupid thread...azbluemach1...if you dont have anything good to say, or anything useful at all...pls dont post at all.
pool is not as simple as potting the ball.

actually locki, potting the ball is really the point, no?

Let me quote Bob Fancher, who writes columns for AZBilliards.com. In his 'Eyes along the Rail' column he states:
***
You know you have done this at least a hundred times, probably a thousand. In fact, you may have done it consistently enough to believe your cue has “too much deflection,” so you’ve bought a new cue.
***
I just think everyone is getting to technical about how much deflection and squirt thier cues have. I still stand by my original comment. Put the ball in the hole. Repeat.

Sorry about the duplicate posts, my computer was having fits.

yes...its the main objective...pot the ball into the pocket...but it doesnt necessarily mean that an ultra-accurate aiming machine monster programmed only to pocket balls would be able to beat a player who has mastered the discipline of proper positioning and strategy. you dont win by just pocketing a ball. ;)

The old timers like Mosconi, Balsis, Crane, etc. normally used a 1/2" tip, a common size of their day...when playing straight pool some liked using a slightly larger tip, only up to about 13mm...which is not much difference but they seemed to like the accuracy of their performance.
I used to have a list of almost all of that era of players tip sizes, but alas, no longer.
I use tip sizes from about 11.75mm to 13mm and different shaft tapers, depending on which game I am playing...snooker, 3 cushion or pool games. But, it is quite a strange feel changing those sizes too often. I once played in a snooker tournament on a 12' table at noon...then on an American 9' table at 4pm ...and then on a small English 7' table at 8pm...it was quite a day!!
Keep your bridge tight and focus!

Smaller diameter shaft verses larger dia. shaft

I notice some Cue manufactures are doing 12.75 mm shafts.
Such as Meucci and Predator.

However companies such as Viking and Mcdermott are sticking to 13mm as there standard size.

Why? The 12.75 shafts feel like toothpicks to me when playing on Bar box tables, with the larger ball size.

Any thoughts?

The bigger the shaft diameter the less deflection. sometimes it depends on the quality of the wood used to make the shaft. Defelection is the movement of the shaft or flex. To help you make a decision on what type of shaft is best for the way you shoot, you shoot try shooting stop shots from a long distance and check your accuracy. You'll probably find out that most of them will be more accurate with the larger diameter shaft. It might be harder to see this on a bar table because of the sloppy pockets. You might want to try it on a better table such as a pool hall table to judge your accuracy. Everyone is different , some are more steady, but not all the time. Also, the greater diameter shaft will deminish in size over time from use by your fingers and cleanings. One more thing, when you're talking about a production cue being sold as being mass produced, it goes back to quality. You'll almost never get the same quality shaft in a production cue, as you would from a custom maker.

jJst to ad, I see that you're comparing meucci and predator to viking and mcdermott. Predsator shafts are laminated and so are meuci black dot shafts; Less deflection, because of the lamination, so they can be made in a smaller diameter.

My play cue is 12.6. That's what I like. End of discussion.

I saw this today and thought it was pretty funny how much everything has changed in 20 years, i still like a good stiff 13mm.

lil ko still wielding 13mm hi deflection maple shaft. but the ko bros are pretty much alone among top rotation players in that regard, along with lee van corteza. most others have production cues with LD shafts

I think a lot of the Philippino players still use 13mm from shooting on hot humid nappy tables.

I know Biado uses a vantage which is 12.9mm and a hard tip

Played with 12.75 all my life dating back to the 90's.

I remember people hating on the mighty twelve-seventy five and played with their big ass 13mm. Oh how things have changed.

I always played with 18oz and the ''bros" want to play with the heaviest. Oh how times have changed.

12.75 and 13 aren’t that far away from each other
Not like a 12 to 12.9
Lololol
