O.K.....as we all know my last thread is getting kinda outta hand, so I'm gonna start another one.

I was watching the 2000 14.1 worlds and Grady was commenting on how big the pockets were on the Gold Crowns, and that causing so many 100 ball runs. We all know how tough the diamonds pockets are, AND how few 100 were run this year.

some random thoughts...

>IMO I'm not for wedged sub-4-1/2" pockets for 14.1.....it just limits the shot selection too much for the game to be played "traditionally". Lets see who picks up on this little comment! ;)

There hadn't been a "world championship" in straight pool in over 15 years, that is, until it's resurection in 2006. I believe you are referring to the us open event of 2000, held in NY?

I don't think there was bad karma from the last thread. I love the hating. Hate typically backs people into a corner with bad posts. Hate makes you stronger. As the Emperor says....

NYC cue dude is correct - that was a US Open event, not a World Event.

The first year of this tournament, Gabriel tables were used (correct me if I am wrong). There were many more 100+ runs on the Gabriel's than the last two years in which the Diamond tables were used. This year, there were very few big runs - only a handful. I heard this was more attributed to the cloth not being new on the tables rather than to the tightness of the pockets. Not sure if that is true though.
 
I was there at the 2000 14.1 US Open. I watched Efren trounce Dallas West.

A few clear memories of that event:

1) I was thinking.... WTFFFFF is Sigel doing with that Mega Memory guy???
2) Miz was there. WTFFFFF is wrong with Miz??? I couldn't believe how OVERWEIGHT he was. I thought to myself...."oh no."
3) Uhhhh....Efren CAN PLAY 14.1
4) Uhhhhhhh....so can Sigel!!!!
5) Whos' this Schmidt guy?

On a very tight table, breaking the balls wide open is not a great option. Pockets get blocked very easily and combos are difficult. So separating the balls a few at a time is my standard operating procedure. I think the tighter pockets make old school play more practical, though the position play will be different, and you may not want as much angle on you break shots if you want to make most of them. Old cloth also makes it harder to break all the balls out at once, favoring old school play.

I think American players would like it more this way because it takes a more powerful game and you'll get more chances at the table or see top notch play from the chair.

What players run the most on 4 1/4 or less corner pockets and does anybody play at all with side pockets tight shimmed too, like mine, near 4 inches?

I heard that some of the players complained about using old sets of balls too, for the World Championship 2008, not only old cloth.

Old balls and old cloth is never a good combination when trying to get a high run, especially not on a Diamond.
 
"Traditional"? Since the late 50s and 60s the only 'traditional' 14.1 tournaments were held once every 10 years or so. The BCA (traditionally held qualifiers for the US 14.1 championships starting some 60 years ago) got hold of the championships because there wasn't a steady sponsor to put up the money needed to have a yearly event.

The 'Tradition' up until the late 50s was to have a champion that had to take challenges from the top rated players at least twice a year. That is one of the reason Willie Mosconi has so many titles (he played the same players 2 and 3 times a year, check the records) each was a World Championship.

Which tradition are we discussing now? table specs? Most of the World Championshis were played on a 5 foot by 10 foot with the slow nappy cloth. Not too many players today remember that slow nappy cloth. Most good pool rooms have converted to Simonis 860 cloth that plays excellent compared to that slow nappy cloth.

Maybe someone ought to build a motel/hotel with a 16 table pool room with stands for 2000 spectators. Only open during the tournament dates and no cameras or internet or phones available. That would be 'traditional' ya think?
 
I rode back to NY with a couple players who both mentioned that the rails on the tables where playing inconsistently, causing a lot of positional errors.

Tom you seem a little angry?:)....I grew up on nappy Mali cloth on a GC1 in our basement.

Actually the "traditional" I was speaking of is more of a 14.1 theory of how to play the game. I'm more of a fan of Dallas west then the new school of playing the game. So, by traditional I meant a way to play the game, not how to run the championship. I WISH the challenge matches of yesteryear would come back as a norm!!! Yea, I know Willie didn't always play the best competition for the World Titles....who cares....no one was gonna beat him anyway! IMO

sorry to get you pissed, but any thread promoting the great game of 14.1 is cool in my book!
