1988 14.1 Invitational

Hello,

Quick question...

I have an old Accu-Stats tape with Mike Zugaln playing Jack Colavita in a straight pool match

I can't recall the exact score, but I believe Zuglan ran 150 and out in the match.

Anyways, does anyone remember where this event took place?

Net-man,
Are you SURE???????? I thought I had all of the Accu-Stats Zuglan videos, and none of them have him playing Jack Colavito (though Jack does do commentary on Accu-Stats). I just searched at www.accu-stats.com and they do not currently sell the video that you have - could you have gotten it elsewhere (or perhaps the opponent is different)??

I'm positive. Its from 1988, so they probably don't sell it anymore. 1 camera, no commentary.

Where was this event held ????

Net,
Dang it!! I would love to have a match with Jack Colavito playing. I like his announcing, and in a match he comentated along with Grady Mathews, Grady described him as one of the best straight pool players ever. Johnny Ervolino was also very complimentary towards Jack, calling him "one of the most treacherous Jersey players."

I'll bet SJM knows, you'll have to wait for him to cross this thread.

I'm thinking that this is the invitational 14.1 tournament that was held in Cleveland, OH. If I'm remembering this correctly Zuglan ran 148 and out unfinished in this match.

Darth,
You are probably thinking of the Zuglan-Ray Martin match where Mike runs 148, then misses a routine shot. Zuglan turns to the camera, points his finger at his own head like a gun, and squeezes it off. The broadcast ends with the frozen image of Zuglan shooting himself in the head with his finger. Martin only ran up to 5 before he missed.

Willie, I believe the match you're describing with Zuglan and Martin happened at the 1992 US Open 14.1 Championships and not in the 1988 Cleveland Invitational tournament.

Junior, yes, Sigel did run 150 & out on Zuglan, a US Open 14.1 record from the break. If I remember correctly, that was a winner's bracket semi-final match. After that Zuglan went over to the one loss side and had to play Dick Lane and won that match that evening and then came back the next day to play Ray Martin where he ran the 148 unfinished on him.

Zuglan was eventually put out of the tournament by Dallas West after West lost to Sigel the first time for the hot seat. Mike won the tournament and again if memory serves that's the only time he's won the US Open 14.1 tournament.

I spoke to Mike Zuglan today and he said this event did indeed take place in 1988 at the Holiday Inn, Cleveland, OH .., He also added that the match was played on a Diamond table with 4 inch pockets.., He won the High Run award at 148 (unfinished) and the second high run was somewhere in the 70's.., Accu- Stats filmed the match using one camera and no commentary.., Grady was in attendance, watched the match and was quick to request a copy as soon as the match ended.

Hey, Willie. Actually, Jack Colavita (not Colavito) was one of my mentors when I was a late teen playing straight pool in the Golden Q. He had several top 10 finshes in the world championships. He was very highly thought of, and beat Mike Sigel in the 1986 Straight pool event in Philadelphia. Great player, though the match referred to is tough to recall. It was probably the Cleveland event, but I thought that was 1989, not 1988, but I'm not sure. If not, it may have been one of the annual straight pool extravaganzas played in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, which I think was run by Jimmy Rempe.

FYI, I was there that night at the Roosevelt Hotel in 1992, the night of Sigel vs Zuglan and, later, Zuglan vs Martin, surely the most breathtaking night of pool I've ever watched. FYI, Mosconi and Caras were there, too. Zuglan didn't dog the 149th ball. It was just a tricky shot, one of those shots where he had a cut vs throw decision to make on a combo where the two object balls weren't quite frozen to each other. He spent quite a bit of time trying to work it how to play it, but didn't work it out.
