Just wondering if the Sands Regency 9B Tournaments back in the 1990s was played on new or old cloth? I know at times they had the Gold Crowns and the AMF Advantage tables but I'm not sure if the cloth was new or not.

I remember Billy Incardona, or perhaps it was our own Mr. Jay Helfert, make mention of new cloth but I'm not sure what they were referring to.

I played in a few of those. From what I remember, they had brand new cloth, but there was like a week of USPPA tournaments played on them before the open started.

Well, one thing I noticed was that it certainly appeared as if it wasn't new cloth. At times it even looked like cloth that was very old and worn. But I know I heard one announcer say on one of the matches that the cloth was new. The next time I run across that comment i'll have to pay closer attention.

Sorry guys, I don't remember what cloth was used from year to year. Sometime in the early to mid 90's Simoniz began sponsoring many tournaments and their cloth was used quite a bit. The other cloth we used back then was Championship Cloth. Almost every year we started with brand new cloth and the tables played slick and fast, and the pockets took a lot of balls. After four or five days of play by the USPPA, the cloth got broken in and played a lot better.

We were playing on Rebco tables for the most part and transitioned to Diamond tables the last few years.

Jay,
Was the Rebco table a look-a-like for the Gold Crown?

And some years the tables had AMF on the side and the announcers (might have been you) said it was the AMF Advantage table.

But like I said, I was surprised when they said the cloth was new. Most tables had the burn streak from breaking from the side up to the rack, the burn spot by the rail where they broke from, and at times closeups and stills appeared to reveal a pretty used/worn cloth.

I too played in these for a few years. They even taped your matches for like a 20 dollar fee. I have a few of my taped matches. I will look and see but if I remember correctly I always played on Gold Crown 3 tables with the new cloth which was Simonis or other equivalent cloth.

I sure do miss those days of pool. Nothing is ever what it once was.

Time flies people. Enjoy the game whatever and wherever you play.

Thanks

Kevin

I started playing in 2006 but I have watched quite a few accu-stats tapes from the Sands Regency tournaments and I'll admit that I enjoy watching 90's pool far more than recent tournaments. Commentary was awesome, there was a crowd behind it and we had Strickland, Archer, Reyes and many others in their prime...it is always a pleasure to watch!

I agree! It was a golden era for Pool in this country. There were dozens of great players who followed the "tour" from event to event. The top players back then were almost exclusively American.

As an aside I spoke to Kim Davenport (newest inductee into the HOF) this morning. He told me how tough it was to win a big tournament back then. He said the first big one he ever won, he had to beat Efren, Sigel, Buddy and Earl in the finals! The equivalent today might be having to go through three Filipinos (Lee Vann, Warren and Dennis) and then have to play Shane in the finals.

I can't even imagine how frightening it must have been for a new comer back then knowing they had to go through Reyes, Strickland, Hall, Varner, Ellin, Bustamante, Archer, Sigel, Mizerak, Davenport...wow

Plus Mataya, Marino, Fusco, Reid, David Howard, Danny Medina, Dan Louie, Jeff Carter, Danny Diliberto, Ray Martin, Ronnie Allen, Wade Crane, Rudolfo Luat, Mike Massey, Keith, Louie and on and on.

No, the Rebco's had their own distinct look. A very good table! We used them at the Sands for at least ten years.
