Pool players have more balls

My go to is Tom Wirth however I'm asking here just for conversation.
I was trapped inside the rack...the balls clustered on the head spot. Not sure how to reply...could not play a good safe. I took a foul. I shot the cue directly into the corner pocket thus scratching...giving my opponent ball in hand in the kitchen. He did not have anything great to shoot at from there...I felt this was my best option. My question...is that legal/ethical...ok sportsmanship?

You accepted and paid a price. One ball and BIH to your opponent.

Nothing at all wrong with that. There are any number of times when an intentional scratch is a good option...

Smart pool. If you have ethical hangups on that, one pocket might not be your game😇. You should take some sadistic delight in a smart push out (that’s really what it was but the cue scratched) especially if your opponent doesn’t like it. Like kicking where you might avoid the foul but might not where either way it puts the cue ball where it needs to be.

There was recent discussion of the unsportsmanlike illegal stoke trapping the cue ball in a corner hook with bih. Your situation is not that at all. Good shot. Nothing unethical about a deliberate unless you later deliberately don’t pay the ball.

In '07 at DCC i was just a 1p newb watching the best for first time. I watch Cliff J. take four intentionals in a row and still win the game. He said later he liked the layout and would rather owe one than mess them up. Great shooter and great thinker.

Saw Larry Schwartz and Steve Oaks play in a 1P tournament at Chris's where the rail was weighed down with coins with each person continually taking fouls (no 3 foul)

As others have said, you played a permitted shot assuming you didn't do some kind of double-hit cue ball manipulation to get to the pocket.

But you may have had a much better play. You could have pushed the cue ball to a point in the kitchen -- like near the corner pocket -- where he would have a worse shot than with ball in hand. The exception to this is if there were balls behind the line that would have been available without the scratch.

Ok thanks …. I was jammed up so tight it was touch the cue or pocket it in my pocket. Could not find a way out. It worked but I felt I did something unsportsmanlike.

All good.

However, you might have been able to nick a ball and leave him in or almost in the jaws.

Intentional fouls are part of the game. I haven't seen someone scratch on purpose unless they're following a ball in but as Bob pointed out, as long as you hit the ball normally there's nothing wrong with it. A serious foul or unsportsmanlike shot would be something like trapping the cue ball against a cushion, or deliberately failing to shoot out of the kitchen with BIH.

Looking back maybe so. I think if I nicked it would have gone directly into the pocket. The tangent from surrounding balls were a dead scratch.
I had to jack up or use the bridge... had to uncomfortably stretch, etc. Maybe I had tunnel vision ...but looked at few options before I executed. Not sure if it was the right move but decided on it. No regrets...it worked but lost anyway from unintentional scratches.

If you have ethical hangups
I do with some women from the past.
one pocket might not be your game😇.
I quit 100 times. And not done.
Was a friendly game. No $. Only complaint was I had a time constraint....that changes things. I was just getting warmed up. I never practiced enough to be solid.. but I'm constantly learning / improving,
Back to subject...was curious about the deliberate pocket foul. Personally I like the choice.

EDIT..thanks for replies. I will sleep well tonight
