20 minute workout

I was wondering if you guys wanted to help out with something. I want to put together a 20 minute workout for people that don't have a lot of time to practice but have enough time to practice a few key things. Once we get all the input I will produce a pdf file that I will post on the forum here for free. Basically I want to get a few drills that are quick to setup, execute, and reset so that practice time is maximized. We can use the WEI RSB Table to demonstrate the shots. It is located here...

http://endeavor.med.nyu.edu/~wei/pool/pooltable2.html

Just for starters I suggest that first and foremost a player needs to work on mechanics and basics. Stoke being most important. What do you think would be better 5 different sessions (for each day of the week) each session working on a different thing or each session a repeat of say four 5 minute drills to work on different things?

This is a good one for aiming accuracy...

Here is the one I was taught by my teacher for accuracy. Straight in shot, but once you think you've got it. Start putting a blocking ball at the first dot. You think you have that down, move the blocking ball a half inch closer to the hole.

I still like Bert Kinister's "Shot #1". I do a whole rack on each side of the table.

Other than that, I line up all 15 balls from side pocket to side pocket and with BIH two diamonds away I shoot 7 balls in one corner pocket and the other 8 in the other corner pocket. Nice little drill to get you in stroke and get your concentration going.

Sometimes I'll vary it from a stop-shot drill to follow one diamond or draw one diamond and then go to 2 and 3 diamonds.

perhaps this has already been suggested, i dunno.

line up a object ball about 12 to 18 inches from a corner pocket. line the cue ball up about 2 feet from this object ball, a straight in shot. shoot to follow and scratch. this will tell you 3 important things: 1) are you aligned properly, 2) are you aiming straight, and 3) are you stroking straight.

if you can follow and scratch pretty much into the center of the corner pocket, your stroke/aim is excellent.

nice warm up drill.

Wow it seems like my 20 minute workout may have to be a 30 to 40 minute workout. :P

It seems short drills with a rotation seems in order so far.. say like the following.

Monday- Aim, Stop Shots, Follow, Draw.
Tuesday- Stop Shots, Follow, Draw, RH English.
Wednesday - Follow, Draw, RH English, LH English.
Thursday - Draw, RH English, LH English, Banks
Friday - RH English, LH English, Banks, Kicks
Saturday - LH English, Banks, Kicks, Aim
Sunday - Banks, Kicks, Aim, Stop Shots

Maybe increasing to a half an hour to try some of the concentration drills.

Man that's a tough shot!!!

Good idea though of using the combination to hone your aiming!

Why try to reinvent the wheel...just get Bert Kinister's 60 minute Workout For 9 ball and 8 ball and divide by 3!
Because that is one persons viewpoint (Berts). I think it would be nice to have a cross section of players make suggestions of what helps their game. That way we could all benifit.

Man in the past two days I have been told I shouldn't post my viewpoint about the UPA and that I am wasting my time in suggesting how to better our practice time. Is it close to a full moon or something?

JV,
You should be allowed to express any opinion you want (as long as it agrees with ours).

Dont worry about it man, I would love to hear what you got to see. Lots of people on here are ignorant. I would love some 30min drills.

IMHO I believe the best thing someone can do in 20 minutes of practice is to work on long straight in shots. Try to stop the CB dead with no sidespin, try to draw the CB back to your tip, and try to follow the OB in the hole. Once you get that down where you are hitting it perfectly almost all the time, cut shots shouldn't be a problem, because when your stroke is straight and you are sending the CB to exactly where you are aiming, that reflects on all things in the game. It's an amazing feeling when you fire in a long straight in shot with draw, stroking it effortlessly, and are able to draw the cueball right back to your cuetip.

Living in Fla. as you do, I'm sure this might be part of the problem in your vote count. But you need to do a recount because we're now up to 4 here on AZ. Actually it might be 5 since LastTwo's draw shot is one of Berts top drills, although he didn't mention Bert by name. Are "chads" going to become an issue?

Barbara,

I am with you. Berts number one is great.

Cheers.

OK! Lets here it. What is Bert's 'number one'? Well, maybe your not comfortable giving away his 'number one' and that is fine. I would just be surprised if it was much different than the straight-in's that the majority of replies here are talking about. I mean do you think he is more specific? Like, must hit the pocket exactly at the spot the cloth meets the leather? What?

I'm don't mean to belittle Bert at all. I know and like Bert. I've played Bert and I've watch Bert give a lesson and was impressed with some of the things I heard him say on the lesson. I just think that every Pool teacher's main shot is the straight in shot. Starting out by finding out how long they need to make the straight-in before you are not deadly accurate. Saying that this shot needs to be one of your main practice shots.

If'n you don't like it plonk my name and never read another one of my posts. As a matter of fact feel free to boycott this thread completely or any other thread I start... Obviously you are too good to learn something new or even attempt to try something to better your game. It must be wonderful to never miss a shot and always have a perfect position. I have strived many years to become a player like yourself. I now see the error in my ways... I have to keep my mouth shut on forums and buy Bert Kinisters Tapes. It is all so clear to me now. Thank you. Oh and I have to burn my predator shaft because according to you after 4 months (which is next month) I will have go back to my Joss shaft because the 'magic' will have worn off.

If you wouldn't mind coming to Fla and teaching me the way I would be so gratefull. Please let me know when your next appearance on ESPN is I enjoy watching greatness. Luke I think I just found 5th spot for your Mosconi Cup.
