Here is a picture of a Skins poster which was displayed throughout the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, the venue site. Driving in to Atlantic City last Thursday, we saw a huge billboard advertising the Skins, just like this one.

After the players meeting on Thursday, Keith and I went to the Simulcast room to kill a little time and a few bucks.

We saw Jose Parica there and went to eat afterwards at one of the many restaurants at the Resorts Casino. This picture was taken at the restaurant. I'm not sure why Jose's head appears bigger than Keith's, but I liked the colorful booth they were sitting in and so I snapped it.

When you arrived at Resorts and entered the front lobby, there was a beautiful Olhausen table front and center, which actually was the designated practice table. At first, I thought this kind of odd, having a practice table in full view, but when I saw the people circling the table and checking out the pool players, inquiring about the Skins event, I thought this was a great way to showcase the Skins Billiards Championship.

Friday morning, I woke up like a rooster in the wee hours of the morning and went downstairs in the lobby and saw that nobody was there. I returned to our room and told Keith that the table was idle, and he immediately got out of bed and went downstairs to hit some balls around. It was about 8:00 a.m. in the morning.

The gentleman with the white shirt standing alongside the table flew in from Norfolk, Virginia, with his wife. He's an airplane pilot by profession, and when he heard the Skins event was going to be in Atlantic City, he coordinated his travel to be there, so that he could see the exhibition at the Super Star Theater. That's Keith practicing alone, but soon came Tony Robles from New York City. By the end of the day, many people were standing around watching the pool players perform. It was kind of neat!

Here is Tony Robles and his dad. When I was watching Tony practicing, he was smooth as silk. His match was the first one of the day on Friday.

Tony lives in New York City, and he willl be competing in a tournament in Puerto Rico sometime soon. He hasn't been back there for 10 years, and he is looking forward to seeing his 86-year-old grandmother when he visits. What a great ambassador for the sport he is, one of my favorite pool players on the tournament trail.

This is the Skins TD and referee Frank Del Pizzo posing with Keith in the front lobby. Frank is a stand-up comedian by profession, and he was one of the highlights of the Skins event. He had everybody laughing between the rounds and really provided a nice atmosphere for the Skins Billiards Championship this year.

Corey Deuel was one of the four finalists at the Skins Billiards Exhibition this year. When he was in the pit, he looked like he just stepped out of GQ magazine. Though he didn't score a skin in the finals, he did have a fantastic performance this year and pocketed a nice chunk of change for his efforts. Corey Deuel is a wizard on a field of green, and he drew many rounds of applause during the event because of his strong shot-making capabilities.

I snapped this shot in the front lobby as Corey was getting ready to practice. Corey is holding his Woodpecker cue stick.

Mika Immonen is a quiet unassuming-type fellow, but when he's in action and competing for big bucks, he's a powerful force. Though he didn't make it to the finals this year, Mika was quite a formidable opponent and brought a lot of cheers from the spectators.

Thank you so much JAM, this helped take my mind off the hurricane going on outside!

Thorsten Hohmann was the player in demand this year at the Skins. When he wasn't giving interviews to the pool media, he was busy conversing with many of the sponsors in attendance. Thorsten is one of pool's super stars, and I'm sure we will all be reading about his many accomplishments down the road on the tournament trail. He was one of the four finalists at the 2004 Skins Billiards Championship.

I hope you stay safe, Shorty, and may this doggone hurricane pass by quickly. This hurricane season has been brutal!

Before his match, Luc Salvas was dining at the buffet at the Resorts. He's always fun and exciting to be around.

During the Skins semi-finals, Luc was getting ready to fire an 8-ball in the hole, and a baby let out a scream from the audience. Luc paused and stood up. Tournament director and referee Frank Del Pizzo asked Luc if he wanted a "time out" or extension. Luc, known as a lightning-fast shooter, never missed a beat and said in his very thick French accent, "No, thanks. I heard a babee." Everybody cracked up. Luc continued on, pocketing the 8 and 9 in about 5 seconds for the win.

Here's the man who makes it happen, along with Allen Hopkins, Matt Braun. He was busy as a bee behind the scenes, and when he happened to step out of the Super Star Theater for a few moments, he was gracious enough to allow me to snap his picture standing next to the Skins chart.

One of the pool's most colorful players, here's Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich. During one of the matches, I saw him turning his head while he was in the pit. He located his girlfriend Danielle who was sitting a little distance away from the playing area. He gave her a wink and whispered the words "I love you." Danny is a happy guy these days, and it shows. He was this close to snapping off the last skin in the finals, but he still done good.

Out of all the players this year at the Skins Billiards Championship, Danny Basavich received the loudest cheers and applause. Always a delight to be around and one of my all-time favorites!

Santos is the 2005 Skins Billiards Championship big winner, pocketing over $72,000.

In the finals, it got so intense. Each player never took a shot for granted, and they were trying with all their might to win. After a couple of hard-fought games, Danny Basavich would raise his fist in the air and let out a Kid Delicious roar, as he's done in the past in excruciating battles.

After Santos pocketed the game-winning ball for the last skin worth $54,000, it was funny to see him release his anxiety and tension by doing the same thing. He danced around the table and held his stick high in the air. It was a very festive occasion and a mighty big win for Santos. He was soon thereafter swarmed with photographers and sponsors.

Congratulations to the Santos! Don't forget that the 2005 Skins Billiards Championship will air on ESPN January 2nd, 2006.

I ask myself, why do we need to pay for all these billiard publications when we have the best right here! Free for all. JAM your contribution to AZ is priceless, especially for those of us that live outside the usa and are not exposed to the battles in the trenches. Your updates almost make me homesick, well almost. Hope we cross paths one day and tell Evil that his ship allready came in when you two found each other!

We should have someone print up a decent azbilliards.com shirt and sell it here so we can raise funds to equip JAM with what she needs to keep posting from tourneys.

Maybe she could print up a shirt of Keith. The right picture on the shirt and you could have an instant classic.

A lot of players I know would buy it if it turned out cool. How 'bout a photo of Keith in his stance on the front and "RACK 'EM, JACK DADDY!" on back?

Ac!!!

Boy does the mere mention of AC make me homesick! :(

As always. thanks JAM for the great pics and excellent commentary!

ps. I would certainly purchase an AZ T-Shirt with EARTHQUAKE on it! :D

Wow, you are the best! The pictures and commentary are fantastic. I am glad Sonny won. He loves my husband and calls his Phillipino buddies here and asks how Mike is (not me, lol).

Can you tell me how the Skins tournament works? I played in a small one in CN once.
