I am not taking sides here at all, but that is one of the real problems with ivory joints. They will crack quite easily, especially in the cold, etc.

I had a brand new cue...never hit...that the joint cracked on in shipment. I had photos of the joint before I shipped the cue, and the customer had photos of the cue with a cracked joint. It was wrapped in lots of bubble wrap and the box was not damaged. We had the joint replaced by the cuemaker.

Personally...when you get to cues of this level and up...$2400 is not that much money. I dont understand why youd think he'd take care of a new piece of ivory and the work that goes into it for free ? How does he know what you did with it ? Look at it from his point of view...you coulda been whacking rocks across the street with it for all he knows...lol.

I guess I've been lucky. I know that ivory joints can crack but not one of mine ever has. Of course I always let the cue come to room temp before playing.

Just for the record, why do you fellas want to see a pic of the crack ? It has to be replaced or repaired anyway. Mike Johnson has treated me very well in the past but he doesn't work for free, nor should he. I know Mike Pancerny at www.customcuemaker.com will do that work very reasonably too...Tom

While you're right, that it has to be replaced anyway, it's always good to know what you're getting into before you buy. Also, looking for any signs of abuse that could cause other problems in the cue.

I bought a SS piloted joint cue from Mike. According to him that is his specialty. Also has ivory ferrules on it. He told me that he only uses top grade ivory and explained the differences in ivory.

I just want to see the crack to see how bad it is. Maybe it can be repaired with super glue???? From what I understand that stuff was developed to repair tissue and bone. Can't hurt for trying.

From the sellers view point it is defective and he is not happy so he wants to sell it. But if may be something that can be lived with for a buyer.

Am not trying to blame anyone. I am sure both have their own reasons about the situation.

Just Curious ...

How bad is the crack? There is a guy that plays our league who has an ivory jointed cue that he cracked some way or another. He took it to the guy who built the cue and the guy said he would replace it anytime he wanted. That was 2 years ago and he is still playing with the cue with the joint cracked. He claims it doesn't effect the playability of cue. So my question to you is ... Does the crack effect the playability or just the aesthetics of the cue.

crack

I bought an older cue and it had a cracked joint. So I had it replaced, came out flawless. I live in Az. but was traveling with a couple of other guys and was in Mn. . A trader at the tournament was interested in it so I had my wife FedEx it to me. Yep, when I got it joint was cracked. Best guess is the altitude it gets cold up there. Ivory joints are pretty touchy things and I believe Mike knows what he is doing. Sorry for your misfortune.
