I'll wait
I will have to let Ric and BadBoy Billiards weigh in on this, but my impression was that you are incorrect in your assumptions.
There were not enough available locations and what was available was exactly that.....astronomical (SP?). People will not stay in the host hotel when the best price you could get is 80-110 a night and Motel 6 is just a few miles away. That was exactly the problem when the tournament was going to different cities each year. The promoter owed all kinds of cash because he couldn't cover the amount of rooms they demanded.
I suppose they could try and do what the ACS is proposing for their Nationals next year: Put a 50-125 fee added to the entry as a voucher that you "get back" if you stay at the host hotel. I think that is going to be the Kiss Of Death for their tournament.
That's why they chose a centrally located venue that gave them a decent price.
I sit there and listen to the players all thoughout the tournaments and it's amazing to hear some of the complaints.
Matches to close together, to far apart, played too early, played too late, tables cost too much, table should have been open and added that cost to the entry, entry too low or there would have been more payout, entry too high, too smokey, they won't let me smoke, they let masters play-had I known that I would have stayed home, I'm a master and you're telling me I can't play???, the cloth is too fast, the cloth is too slow, on and on and on....but the best one "If I have to pay that for one more beer I'm going into the parking lot and drink a 6 pack"
It's a thankless job and you still have to make a profit unless you're rich and like giving your money away.
It is working, it just didn't work for the 9 Ball tourney which has more to do with the game of 9 Ball than location

Without knowing the specifics on venues and pricing that are available in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, or Austin I could be wrong, but I have to think between those 4 large cities you could find a venue or three that would work much better overall. The current location obviously isn't working.
