2015 AZ Billiards Straight Pool Challenge!

I got 30:) Tied my high run from last year. Lets see if I can get more soon... I just started playing it this week after not playing it since last year. May stay on straight pool for the winter, we shall see.

Video is edited to 3 min for easy viewing.

Thanks, enjoyed watching it! First rack virtually textbook (Nice stroke and cue action, too!), second with great entertainment factor - kept wondering how you eventually made it to 30, but then, every problem solved (Wow!) and into the third rack (Very nicely done!), the real surprise was that you went for that tough cut (Huh?) when there were three easier ones to choose from, and plenty of time and opportunity to rebreak the pile!? Never shoot a shot one could miss!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Thank you! That second rack was crazy! Every time I tried to improve the clusters they got worse. lol. Then I had a plan to play that ball in the side pocket at 2:25, follow forward slightly off the rail, with an angle to go off the 14 (I think its the 14) into the cluster on the rail. I came just a hair too far, and didn't have the angle. So thats when I played the shot in the corner and tried to draw back to the proper poision for the same shot, and drew a few inches too far, and went 3 rails into the cluster instead of no rails.

Will follow up on last rack on next post...

Here is a screen shot from the unedited video (not on youtube) where I was looking at the option of shooting the 1 instead of the 14 ball on the rail. I for some reason thought the cb was going to get stuck in the pack, and because the 12 didn't go because of the 6, I wouldn't have an insurance shot. I thought the 1 and the 14 were about the same difficulty, but the 14 would have a better chance of giving me a shot afterwards. That was my thought process anyway:)

Looking at the video now, I think I wold have shot the 10 ball in the upper corner, and went from there. I don't think I even saw that when I was playing.

I didn't think the 12 was any good because I think it was too steep of a cut, and the only shot even if it went afterwards, would have been the 10 in the same corner, from down town.

What would you have done?

10 uptable, 12 one rail to the 1 (to the other side, i.e. between 15 and 1), trying to get perpendicular with the 1 (fractionally below it at worst), open stack with the 1, insurance ball being the 14 (although there's going to be nothing touching after the 1, plenty of choice).

Alternatively, that is if the angle is just right to do so, shoot the 10 uptable with draw, just barely bumping the 12 towards the corner pocket and shoot the 1 from there - two insurance balls, only that splitting the 3 and the 7 hitting the 3 first won't move the 6, so unless bumping the 12 low enough (= to absolute perfection where one can see it from where the 7 is now, and without the need to adjust shooting the 10 up table - no use decreasing one's make-percentage), the insurance on the 15 is worthless - at least to me: I'm personally not one to run a lot of balls because I'm a shotmaker, on the contrary, I'm constantly trying to find shots one can't possibly miss, with triple insurance, so going through the 7 to ever shoot the 15 from up there is something that wouldn't cross my mind except in a nightmare. ;)

There's no reason to feel as if you were in a hurry opening up the balls in this manner, as there's still the 6 if one gets too flat on the 1. Basically, at least that's the way I'm teaching the game, when one constantly feels as if one needed to fit a camel through the eye of a needle, one isn't playing good Straight Pool - that's only when one feels as if one has plenty of choice, plenty of time and opportunity to solve problems, if indeed there are any at all…

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Thanks!

I set them up just now as close as I could to how they were and tried your pattern. Although I messed it up and came too far for the 1, I had the insurance of the 6 like you said. Much better route than what I went for.

You're welcome! Try to lengthen the angle going around the 1 (= more towards the side rail instead of across the desired position area) instead of shooting more slowly. That way, the worst case scenario would be to get too low or close to the side rail. Controlling speed is more low-percentage than to adjust the drag-draw and side spin (also, it won't work as well on foreign equipment). Once you start doing that, you'll get perfectly perpendicular 9 out of 10 times, under-run your position or overrun to the side rail once in a while, to where the 1 is still makable. That one time out of ten, old-style players would then shoot the 1 in at the most comfortable pace, not trying to bust everything open, concentrating on a nice follow-through to give the cue ball the best chance to free itself from the clusters. Bottom line: never shoot a shot one could miss, and you'll soon put together more considerable runs.

please push me up a little with a modest run of 28 (yes, I missed a steep-angled break ball), as of October 5th.

Today ran 85 against my good friend :)
Too bad run ended with unbelievable bad contact. It was humid weather so cueball picked a lot of chalk and i did not want to clean it all of time...

Ps. good timing. Finnish 14.1 champs are just in two days!

Great shooting! Was nice to meet up at the Finnish Champs, been a few years... :)

straight pool match :

I posted my 85 run on YouTube. Actually I posted whole match against my friend. 85 run starts at 24:10

I also tried make some commentary where I talk little bit patterns etc.. Tell me what you guys think. It is surprise how difficult it is. At least when you are calling your own game.

I got also other match(on computer) where I play against left hand :D
I could try to do some commentary there also :p

Oh wow, this is great fun - love listening to other players' thoughts on pattern play. I've only watched part of the match so far, but enjoying it tremendously, thank you!

Thank You for all you do for all of us Andy, cant wait to see who's the 1st one on the list !!!

Happy New Year
-Steve

Yesterday I started my match with Hank R with a 29 ball run. Ran the first 2 racks nicely then shot a behind the rack break ball and got stuck dead in a cluster.

I shimmed my pockets 1/4 inch tighter today. I was gonna wait till I ran over 117 on my 10 footer but I'll just do it with the tighter pockets. Can't hurt my game.

I ran a 76 today. Another nip and tuck last rack which ended me getting frozen to a ball, made a difficult long shot but no position except an off-angle long combo 3' away from the pocket which I missed. For the first time in months I really felt the 100 was coming. Maybe it will :o
