2022 World Pool Masters (May 5-8)

Stu, you failed to mention one of Filler’s first big wins as a professional, the Gabriel’s Sentinel 10-foot 10-ball Challenge at the 2016 Deurne City Classic, where at age 18, Filler bested a field of 16 top Euro pro players including Shaw, Feijen, Chinakhov and Immonen among others.

That win was particularly meaningful to me, as I was able to acquire from Thierry Gabriel the tournament used Gabriel’s Sentinel prototype table upon which all tournament matches were played on, which turned out to be the only 10-foot Sentinel pool table Gabriel’s ever made. One day we hope to have an opportunity to lure Josh here to Family Billiards (Boone, NC) to sign the table for us.
I can only write about the events I'm aware of and I've never heard of the Duerne City Classic. I tend to remember all the winners at pool's most prestigious events but expecting me to know every last detail of Josh Filler's resume is asking a lot. If this was a prestigious title of which I failed to take note, I apologize.

Filler has obviously been one of the top pros of late, but he is hardly a dominant figure. Per AZB he has topped the year-long money list only once.

He is more like Jordan Spieth than Tiger Woods at this point in his career. He has won a number of major tournaments but is nowhere close to head and shoulders above everyone else.

i agree about dominance, but that says more about the depth of talent in elite pool nowadays. filler isn't a dominating figure, and i doubt we will see anyone dominating the sport anytime soon. but one can be the best player without dominating, and i definitely consider filler the best right now.

ronnie o'sullivan has never dominated the pro snooker tour as stephen hendry did in the 90's, or davis in the 80's.

Stu, I only mentioned it for the personal reasons I explained in the second paragraph - that I was able to acquire the tournament used Gabriel’s 10-foot table from that event. The Deurne City Classic sounds like Belgium’s version of Derby City or SBE, and I’m not sure if it’s survived as an annual event or not.

Does anyone have the final statistics for the whole tournament? Such as break and runs, missed balls, multiple break and runs, Etc? I'm curious as to what the statistics are comparing last year to this year's 4 inch pockets. I know some of you guys keep track of all this stuff.

Regarding Ronnie, maybe there more quality players now.

yes, so much more good players that it's hard to even compare. ronnie wasn't the bookies favorite to win it this year, he was like 4th. hendry was always favorite and no 1 ranked for 8 consecutive years

I don't disagree with you, I'm just pushing back on this idea that Filler is some kind of generational dominant figure with a top-5 resume already at age 24. He may end up there but he's not there yet. Spieth also looked like he was going to blow up the record books but it hasn't happened.

SVB - 5 US Open 9 balls, 12 other US Opens, 1 World 9 ball
Sigel - multiple world titles, 3 US Open 9 balls
Efren - duh
Mosconi - 19 world straight pool titles
Strickland - 3 world titles, 5 US Open 9 balls

These are just a few of the most obvious resumes that are better than Filler's at the present moment. This is not to say Filler won't surpass them but we will have to wait and see.

Compare all 5 of those guys you mention above and how many titles each of them had achieved by age 24? I’m not even sure if Willie had won the first of his numerous straight pool world titles by that age.

Like I said above, I agree Filler is on a torrid pace that would put him into the "all timers" category if it continues. But he is simply not in the top 5 careers yet as has been argued here.

Note that both events used a Rasson OX table with 4" corner pockets.

Quite a few more B&Rs this year.

As SJM and myself have stated, there’s a strong case for him being considered the best pool player in the world right now. No one has said anything about his being among the top 5 all time just yet.

Well, I guess I was wrong in my assumption without re-reading SJM’s texts. I agree with you that clearly it is too early in his career for those kind of all time great comparisons, but he is certainly off to a strong start.

I noticed a change in the Fargo ratings.

  6. Francisco Sanchez Ruiz ESP 822
  7. Jayson Shaw GBR 822

Filler passes the eye test.
Yeah, between Filler and Shaw, they make every shot look easy regardless of the pocket size. They're so confident they look like they're only half trying on most shots. If ever you plan on beating one of those two guys, you need to play damn near perfect AND get a couple rolls.

As much as I love watching the previous generations of pool legends, those two guys would run them all over in 9 or 10 ball.

Yes, like DCC, Deurne City even called the 10-foot event the "Bigfoot Challenge."

It was June of 2016, and Filler beat Marco Teutscher 11-5, Nick Van denBerg 11-9, Nick Ekonomopoulos 11-6, and Jayson Shaw 11-10

btw, Ernesto's in Fargo now doing--amongst others--the Gabriels tables here. He talks fondly of Boone NC

Great event with a lot of nice stories. Filler's greatness, the emergence of Lo Ho Sum, Orcullo's return, a Ko vs Ko matchup.

As noted on the stream, Filler has now won every Matchroom title available to date. Mosconi and MVP, World Pool Championship, World Pool Masters, World Cup of Pool, and he also won the inaugural edition of the Matchroom US Open in 2019. He has accomplished all this by the age of 24, along with the China Open and the American 14.1, the European 9-ball title, several Eurotour titles, and a lot of other titles.

By my reckoning, Josh already has one of the five best resumes in pool history. No player in our game's history had achieved anything close to this by age 24. I think we're watching a player who, fifteen years from now, will be thought of as the greatest player of all time. Nonetheless, it's too early to put him in the conversation. His work ethic is as great as his talent, which is a really scary thought.
Joshua was still 16 years old when we posted this. With 189 games, he didn't yet have an established rating in August 2015. His preliminary rating, though, got our attention
