2023 China Open 9 Ball (7-10 September), Shanghai. Winner $40K

Over the past fifteen years, just two active women have won three WPA World 9-ball Championships. That would be Shasha Liu and Han Yu. They'll meet in the final of the 2023 China Open. By any measure but Fargo, Han Yu was the player of the last decade, winning three world 9-ball championships, but this will surely be a tough assignment.

i wasn't aware of shasha liu at all, but seeing her blazing thru the field made me check her wikipedia. wow. amazing what these chinese girls have achieved and at a young age.

haven't followed the women tour much but it would definitely be stronger if the full force of chinese (and korean) players competed more internationally

Yes, I think it was the first time I heard the Filler victory scream, when he was just 19. He was a bit more reserved this time, even looked a bit tired.

i think the game difference 11-5 is below the filler shout in the face threshold. and jumping on the table might've landed him in a CCP gulag camp 🫣

Would venture a guess that a combined Fargo of 1678 (Filler 843 Raga 835) in a final is the highest ever.

The cream has always risen to the top at the China Open. Well played, Josh!

Have we reached the point in our sport where nobody rated under Fargo 800 is even a contender to reach the final day (semifinals) of competition in a major? The only exception I can think of in 2023 is Pijus Labutis (789) of Lithuania at the Spanish Open.

Tevez was in 2022, but the other two were this year. Soufi 780, Bijsterbosch 779. Thanks for that.

Still, seems that the 775 to 799 gang are Cinderella stories when they reach the final day of a major. It's getting awful tough at the top.

Omar Al-Shaheen reached the finals of the W9B in 2021 against Albin. He's currently 782 and I believe he was even lower in 2021.

Yes, but I was referring to 2023. I know it has happened countless times in the past that lower Fargo's have gone deep. My best guess is that Omar was only in the 750s in 2021 when he reached the WPC final.

According to a post by Mike Page just prior to the first round of the 2021 WPC, Al Shaheen's FargoRate at the time was 777. (Edit: and currently at 782)
