3/8x9 shaft on a 3/8x10 pin?

I'd like to put my Mezz Hybrid Alpha and Hybrid Pro 2 shafts onto a butt with a 3/8x10 pin.

The shafts have Wavy joints, which (I've read on this forum) are 3/8x9.

I tried one out and it screwed on fine and seemed not be damaged. Is this OK to do or am I going to be damaging the shafts?

If it screwed on & off ok without you seeing wood dust, then i'd imagine it's ok with the butt you are using. Another butt with a longer or slightly thicker pin may be a different story, though.

I've never heard of a 3/8x9 but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
I'm going to look at the Mezz cues tomorrow when I go to Seybert's.

You'll be surprised. Mezz cues are awesome. They are light years ahead of any other production cue in every category......except maybe design. I'm not crazy about their designs. If you get a chance, play with a few different shaft types. I like the Hybrid.

i think you'd have to have it doweled and redone

Could be wrong, but I believe they are 3/8-10. I was speaking about them with some Mezz reps this past May & i'm pretty sure they described them as 3/8-10. Like I said, could be wrong.

I've seen several threads including this one describing the Wavy joint as 3/8x9.

I own an Ace K cue with a Wavy joint pin. It definitely looks different than a true 3/8x10 pin, there are fewer turns-per-inch and the shape of the threads is a little different. Nevertheless, with a little turning the shaft fits the 3/8x10 pin on my custom Schmelke. No wood dust. Nice and snug and it backs off fine. I understand that it's not ideal, I just don't want to have to go out and pay another $285 for a new shaft with a true 3/8x10 joint.

they say 3/8-9 in their description of the wavy joint pin

In this particular case who cares if it's 3/8-9 or 3/8-10 or even 5/16-14. As long as it screws down flush with the joint, what more is needed?

I've been using it with the 3/8 x 10 pin with no problems so far. If I tap the shaft downwards after playing I will get a small amt. of sawdust though, just a tiny bit.

Would anyone know, if this shaft were to get loose, what is a way to snug it up? Sawdust? Plastic wood? It is not loose now and is still tighter than my Predator 314-2 3/8 x 10 shaft.

wow this is great i got the axi but i want to get a predator shaft for my cue and now contemplating buying a new mezz so i can get a pred shaft but so much moving around of equipment... please let us know what kind of joint to get for the wavy joint pin.

I don't think it will work:

Mezz butt with wavy joint pin + Predator 314-2 3/8x10 shaft = DOES NOT FIT

Schmelke butt with 3/8 x 10 pin + Mezz Hybrid Pro 2 (wavy joint) shaft = FITS

Go figure.

Ok, I went and I figured.
The reason that your Pred. 3/8x10 won't go on the Mezz (9) is because the Pred. has a phenolic insert.
It won't distort to accommodate the Mezz pin where the shaft with the wood threads will distort (permanently).
I see some type of thread repair in your future.

Since it screwed on it is now a 3/8-9 thread shaft and will probably be okay. Worst case senerio is you having to have it plugged and re-threaded some time in the future. For now just play with it and enjoy it. Hopefully it will last a lifetime.
