from basement, 'steps are 4 feet wide'- to basement 'MOVING TO A HOUSE WITH A WALK OUT BASEMENT 20x40 no poles'.

CORRECT,have to go up 10 steps from basement. the steps are 4 feet wide. Thanks

Better have an extra bowl of wheaties on moving day.
You might do well to build some sort of ramp to get the slates up the steps.
Couple of guys pushing and couple on top pulling with a rope or cable.

I get the picture in my mind of a thousand Egyptians pulling the stones to build the Pyramids. :grin-square:

A wise mechanic one told me he'd go into a Gold's Gym and find a few guys to help there, when he was on the road.

oops sorry I didn't read all the posts.

I had exactly the same problem only not 2"+ slates. Mine are heavy 1-1/2"+ on a 10' Brunswick Carom T-Rail.

I was lucky enough to know a world class dead lift champion. The steps were carpeted and we slid them up with him and another pushing at the bottom. Another large guy did what he could to help get it past the lip of the next step.

Before we attempted this I reinforced the steps with 4X4's

Go to your local weight lifting club and find 2 or 3 of the largest guys they have. Pay them some decent money along with a challenge. "Bet none of you guys can get this done"

If you're real industrious you can build some slides. Take a 2X4 and screw in some UHMW Plastic Strips. UHMW is the stuff used in plastic cutting boards. Its slick. Run some wood along each side of the plastic to create a channel to keep the slate on the slide. Then push like hell.

Good luck.

By the way I hired a guy to move my 700 lbs safe. He had commercially made slider boards that used UHMW. His were only about 4' long and he had 6 pcs. Push it to the end then pick up the unused pair(s) and move them up ahead. Push some more. Was actually easy but in this case there were no steps.

if your rails are bolted through the slate, this is how i do it: put the slate on its edge, slide two steel rods through the rail bolt holes, lift with 2 guys in front 2 in back, slate between shoulders, it's easier than it looks.
