3 Cushion Shaft on Pool Cue

I would like some opinions on building a 3 cushion shaft for a pool cue. I am assuming it is possible so what are the thoughts of the builders. I want to use the shaft on a cue with brass radial pin. My reasoning behind this is my KF 3 cushion cue has warped so badly in the forearm that it is useless to play with it. Lately I have been using my pool cue and have found that I score better with it (it has ivory ferrules), so I am thinking that I should just get a shaft made for it..Is there any reason that this is not a good idea? Which taper would be recommended?

Ive played a bit of three cushion, and found that the more coinical the taper, the stiffer the hit was. I played with a guy that had a Schuler with three shafts, one for pool, one for snooker, one for 3 cushion and hit lights out. but the taper was definatly more coinical and with a short ferrul to add to the stiffness.
 
Conical or modified conical taper is definitely the way to go for three cushion. You just need to decide tip diameter and length you want to play with. I prefer the carom cue to be the same length as my pool cue as I am used to it. But the shorter shaft will hit a little stiffer. If you are used to a 55" or 56" carom cue and you like that, then make your carom shaft 2 or 3 inches shorter than you pool cue shaft.
 
THANKS Chris, What you have stated makes sense when I think about it. I never felt really comfortable with the shorter carom cue and struggled with draw also. When I went to my pool cue everything just felt better and more like what I am used to. Probably one of the reasons my scoring went up. The ivory ferrule concerned me because I am worried about damaging it with the heavier balls. Can you explain what a conical taper is in layman terms?

This pic is from the Schuler website. The carom (conical) taper grows gradually starting from the ferrule all the way to the joint. The pool taper doesn't grow for many inches from the ferrule, or grows so gradually that it is hardly noticeable.

I've made a few 3 cushion shafts with pure conical and modified . The modified is preferred because the taper is more comfortable to play with . I've also made some out of ash , although some might think ugly , actually play stiffer than maple . A plus for 3 cushion . If sealed and sanded properly they play great . I use phenolic ferrel material 3/8" - 1/2" long , as far as tip diameter and length I leave it up to the customer .If unsure of what specs you want try to hit with someones cue to get an idea ... I love 3 cushion and a salute to Jorge Esquivel and Mario Suarez and the other Mexican champions , too many to mention , true gentleman and great players ...:cool:

A conical taper means it gets steadily larger from the tip to the joint. It is a straight angled taper like a normal cue butt has, instead of the curved Pro taper most pool cue shafts have. Think of a cone.
 
Thanks for the explanations about conical tapers and to Eric Wynne most of the folks I play are hispanic also. When I first started they politely left me to my practicing but lately have started to play me for table time. Great game and I consider myself lucky to be nearby to Chris's in Chicago there are always players there. They now have 7, 3 cushion tables!!

i've done it

last year i had a customer want one of my cues with a regular shaft and he also wanted a 27 inch shaft with the stiff taper, i believe he wanted a 12 mm tip. i'm at work and my record book is at home, but i believe he post on azb. i think he was happy using the wood pin and the short shaft for billiards.
 
I use Schuler's "American taper" shaft--that is kind of midway between the pro-style pool shaft and the constant taper carom shaft. I've had no problem using my Schuler cue for either discipline.
