3 rail out of the corner shot

Hi all,

Have issues shooting this shot, and I'm not sure if the issue is that I can't apply enough english to the cueball or if I'm not using the right english. From B with the ball on the rail, it's low left, from A with the call a bit off the rail just right? Or is B also just side english with no bottom? This call for a hit close to the edge of the cueball?

Hey buddy...If you don't want draw on the CB, when it gets to the OB in this shot (which you don't)...why aim low at all? As you said, straight side and natural roll is all that's needed to carry the CB. Catch my drift? KISS rules! :D

To the OP...Yes, striking the CB further out on the edge will result in more sidespin...so you can shoot a lot easier on this shot.

You can hit the cb high or low for this shot. Just don't have draw (backspin) on the cb when it gets to the ob. The side spin is what brings you around the table.

Try this- choke up your bridge hand fairly close to the ob. That way you know you will hit the cb where you want to. Then, using a striped ball on edge for the cb, hit out at the edge of the stripe.

Once you get used to how it feels, you can move your bridge hand a little farther back to where it is more comfortable for you.

The reason I asked if the frozen to the rail shot is hit with low left is because in a match I watched, one of the commentators stated that "he'll shoot this with low left". Seemed odd to me, but I thought maybe with the ball frozen it added something to the shot to make it go around better.

I think the issue I have is that I line up for the shot with side, but when I shoot my stoke brings the tip back to center more and I just end up thunking into the rail by the opposide corner pocket or scratching. I think once that I remember I hit this well.

Either shot requires inside English, one looks like you could use top to side and the other looks like it would need bottom inside.

The ONLY reason you would hit this shot with a low ball is if you did NOT want the cueball to go forward, but instead come straight across the table and back out towards the center - which would involve hitting this shot rail-first. See below:

Otherwise, you want to go forward with the cue ball, as everyone has suggested.

Do a google search for Joe Tucker Rail Drill and you'll see several great drills for learning how to handle these shots.

Maybe,it is too obvious to mention, don't hit the shot too hard.Let the spin carry the rock around the corner! A hard stroke cause the cb to come straighter across-or to put it correctly-further along the tangent line before the english causes the cb path to bend.

Just my 2 cents.Jack

Speed is relative-If shot hard enough to drive cb into the rail-it
is difficult to get where cb is shown in op diagram.

English is my primary language,so nothing was lost in translation,if that is what you meant! HAHAHEEHEE

When you refer to English: top or bottom-right or left?

The key to this shot is hitting the ball first or hitting the rail first.

If you hit the ball first, the cue ball will then hit the rail and the english will take in the direction of the spin.

If you hit the rail first, the cue ball will then hit the object ball and come straight across the table unless you have high or low english on the cue ball.

To get the 3 rail out of the corner as you requested---hit the object ball first with inside spin.
