Okay to start I don't have any experience with 30 inch shafts. Besides the obvious extra

inch and change in balance, is there any noticeable difference in how the shaft feels. I'd

imagine that a stiffer/fatter shaft would gain a little more flex and that thinner/flexible

shaft would get a little whippy. I'm interested in converting and want to try going that

direction. Rollcall for who plays with a 30".
 
30 inches seems like a little bit too much to handle, at least that's what she said.

Rock,

I think you are assuming the added inch or 2 is done at the tip end.

The tip end & taper can be exactly the same & the length can be 'added' at the joint end.

I have 29 & 30" OB Pro shafts & other than what you mention regarding length & balance I feel no other difference & I am 'feel' player.

When I first went to the 30 inch shaft I did foul the CB a few times at first but only a few times & only for a shot period of time.

I went to a 30" shaft and didn't notice any difference in the way it hit the ball or the balance of the cue. It's a Predator shaft so I wouldn't know with a regular shaft.
 
I play with 30" OB2 shafts (OB2 and OB2+). I also have a 29" OB2. (all have UltraSkin ProSoft tips) They're all 3/8" x10 threads.

I like the slightly more forward balance of the 30" shaft and the one more inch I can reach before needing a rake. But the "feel" is the same.
 
I have been shooting with 30" McDermott shafts for 25+ years. I do not have any problems going from 58" to 60" cue, or back again.

I like the extra length for reach, and because I'm taller than average.

If I had to pick just one size, I would go with the longer cue.

Only way to really know is to try for yourself!
 
Okay so I'm guessing most cue makers add the inch at the joint. Which would make sense for keeping the taper consistent and versatile manufacturing.
 
I play with a 30" shaft and I love the difference. It's just an inch so it seems minor, but my hand doesn't grip at the very end of the butt anymore and I no longer feel like I'm constricting my long frame.

My 30" shaft I would say is a bit whippier than the original 29" shaft, but I think that has more to do with the 30" one being 12.6mm and the 29" one being 13.3mm.
 
I played for 10 years with 58" cues, but my hand would fall off the back at times. Then I started using a 30" shaft (59" total) and that was way better for my hand. Then I had a 30" butt made to go along with the 30" shaft (60" total).

Except for my hand having more room so it would not fall off the butt of the cue, none of the 3 configuration made absolutely any difference that I could tell to the way the cues felt or played.

Note, the shafts in all the above were Predator shafts.

This has been my personal experience.
 
I played with 31" shafts for years to take a standard cue to 60". I liked the forward balance of it.

Then I just started getting 60" cues made with a 30/30 split and while I can play just fine with a standard 58" cue I choose to play with 60" and will never revert back. It has a lot of advantages I just wouldn't want to give up.
 
When I first started using the 30 inch shaft I felt like I was getting "ahead" of the shot.

What I noticed after a few shots is that I needed to adjust my bridge and grip hand a bit.

In order to keep the same distance between your bridge hand and the tip of the cue, you must adjust your hand on the grip to keep the same "stroke length".

As little as it is, the extra inch is noticeable when it comes to the playing characteristics of your cue.
 
It`s really no difference, apart for that 1" extra reach.
If you can, choose a 30" shaft.
