I talked to Gary at GCue yesterday and there were about 40 entries so far and I suspect there to be many more Saturday and Monday, right at the deadline. I have a little feeling this is going to be a good one this year.

Today is Sat Aug 18th... Last day for entries at $125... Tomorrow they go up to $150. So if you know your going to play for sure, you might as well save yourself the $25....

Maybe, maybe not. My back has been bothering me for a couple of months and it just depends on how it feels next weekend. I don't get excited about playing like I used to.

Sorry you feel that way about Gary Welling and his family, but they take pride in the tradition of the Texas Open. FWIW, the TX Open is the second oldest running event in the US behind only to the US Open. These events happen after much hard work, preparation, and Expenhse. By the time the bell rings to begin, most of the time, the facilitators are worn out and stressed to the max. There is much more detail involved than meets the eye.
G-Cue and ownership owns the rights to the Texas Open and IMO should be applauded for keeping it alive and going through what they do each year. It will be fun again this year.

I will also say this about Gary Welling and G-Cue....I went to Texas Tech and we had a billiards team, just like many of the Texas universities. We couldn't hold a tournament in Lubbock since it was so far away from everyone, so I talked with Gary and he not only helped us by letting us use G-Cue, but he had Breakfast there for us as well as worked with us to get it to happen. He opened earlier than normal so we could get there and get set up. He was very gracious and he also helped us with some free pool the night before the tournaments since we had a nice 6 1/2 hour drive the day before to get there. A tournament is hard to set up in Round Rock when you live in Lubbock, Tx. He, in my opinion, does a great job. I just wish other people would be able to see it.
It is true that it gets pretty cramped in his room, especially when he brings in bleachers for spectators to watch the Texas State Open, but he has great tables and keeps them clean and nice!

I have a few questions-
1) You keep stating this is the 2nd longest running tournament to the US Open--How long has it been running?
2) Why is there an exclusion of the top 32 WPBA women but there is no exclusion for men? That makes no sense.
3) Does play start Friday night? If you are pre paid can you show up Saturday?

Firstly this is the 34th year for the Texas Open.
Secondly since excluding the top 32 touring pros, participation in the "Ladies event" has increased by about 30%. The Open event is just that, "Open". The ladies event is not.
Fianally, play will start Saturday and the time will be announced Friday Night as I conduct the players meeting. The start time will be dictated by the number of entrants. My best guess will be 11:00 am, but could be aas early as 10:00 am. Again, it just depends on the number of entrants.
To anticipate another question, Stones and I conduct the Auction and serve as TD for both the Open and Ladies event. I believe this to be out 4th year. No, we don't make all the rules.
