34th TEXAS STATE 9 BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - AUG. 31st - SEPT. 3rd

Zach, I just got two pm's about your post and two phone calls. You are right, this is ridiculous. You are way out of line and need to learn some tact when dealing with people.

I have a drinking problem too and you are right, it is my problem and nobody elses. I don't make it anyone elses problem either.

Gary and Kevin Welling should be applauded for their efforts and generosity in keeping the tradition of the Texas Open alive. If you think they are doing this for profit, you are sorely mistaken. Facilitating such an event takes lots of planning, money, and endless hours of prearation. They should be comended for their efforts and hard work.

My suggestion to you is rethink your position before meeting Gary and Kevin head on. They are sharp men, but they will stand their ground.

I never said anything about someone making a profit either...where are you getting this stuff????? Does anyone else see this in my post? Am I halucinating?

This is Kevin Welling from G Cue Billiards. I don't know what you are basing this statement from, but I AM a pool player.

>I'm not going to reveal specifics, or names. I'll just say that I overheard a rude comment by the owner referring to the players in the weekly tournament as cheap and a term that Samuel Jackson is famous for. As a participant in that event and previous others, I took offense to that comment and I haven't been back since. You just can't treat your customers with such disrespect and not expect to hear about it.

I don't know what any other pool room owners do out there to support the game but I know we do way more than our share every year. Just in the past year we have sponsored a couple of women in Hunter Tour events, sponsored BCA teams that have gone to Vegas, have weekly and monthly 9-ball events, sponsor a local woman pro every month, and spend over $10,000 and 100's of hours every year to put on the Texas Open.
>Why do you feel the need to explain to us the work you do to promote the game? Is it really such a big sacrifice for you?

As far as our place being "run down", I'd like to see where you play pool every day. In the last year, we've had new carpet installed in the bar and on the main floor, had stained concrete installed in walkway areas, painted most of the room, had a table mechanic work on the table a few times, and installed a 50" plasma screen TV.
>That's great that your are doing soething to improve the conditions there. I would have liked to have seen that about 5 years ago.

Let's leave the personal comments out (including other owners like the Billiard's Den 12 step comment) I don't mind when someone says they don't like playing on our tables. I admit they are hard to master. They are extremely fast so a mistake that puts you out of line by an inch or two on average tables becomes out of line by a foot or two at G Cue. The top players that come in for the Open every year always compliment me on how great the equipment is for a public room that is being played on by your "smack 'em around" beer drinkers. That is compliment enough for me.
>"Smack'em around beer drinkers" huh? Thanks for letting us know what you think about your regular clients. Not too far from the tree eh?

If you had a bad experience at G Cue before, come by and let me buy you a drink. I assure you I don't mind pool players. You might even convince me to play a set or two. :)
>I've played you before and you never bought me a drink, so why start now?

The two go hand in hand. As I stated before about the poster making a comment on someone's drinking habits, a public forum is not the place. If you have issue with something I would like to talk about it face to face.

I'm sorry you feel the way you do. My family does give back to the sport more than most. Am I stating that for recognition? No. Simply defending your accusation.

Abraham Lincoln was right.

As far as the tournament, we are on pace to have the greatest Texas Open in history. There are more quality entrants than any time in the tournament's history. David Hensen will be back to defend his title. It will be interesting to see if a new participant like Corey Deuel will be able to carve his name on the Vanover Cup and earn a lifetime exemption.

I have a drinking problem, too. My problem is Melinda has never bought me a drink.

Kevin, it's simply absurd that you have to come on this forum and defend you and your father's position. The people who have been around Texas pool for any length of time know what y'all have done for the sport in this state.

The credentials speak for themselves. Longest running tourney in the state and second longest running in the nation!

I guess you just cann't please all the people all the time.

Anyway, the 34th Annuakl Texas Open is in town this weekend and it is going to be a good one.

Lets start a couple of days early.

Melinda said she is buying the first round!!!!

Man I'd love to make it, but I can't take the time to go play! I might possibly be able to come watch on Sat or Sunday.

So if you win the Texas Open, you get free entries for life? (Did I hear that right?)

This is the reason this sport doesn't grow. Typical pool players wanting something for free.

You keep up the great work. Good luck this weekend.
I will be there to support the event.

If I don't work... I'm showing up... TO WATCH hehe. Theres a carom table there too right?

Yes, there's a heated-slate Veroheven table that will get action almost all weekend long.

You guys barking at each other reminded me to remind everybody G Cue is open 24 hours/day during the event. There'll be plenty of action going down.

As far as who is the favorite. You have to like guys like Cory Deuel or Mike Davis, but in all the years of the tournament there have only been a couple guys from outside the state of Texas win it. Maybe this is the year Lizard redeems himself.

We made the lifetime exemption rule for the Open winners two years ago. So guys like Jeremy Jones, CJ Wiley, Buddy Hall, Gabe Owen, etc never have to pay an entry again.

Bottom line, there should be some great players to watch fight for the championship come Monday.

Speaking of the 7 ball ... any chance the Corey - David G woofing from a while back is gonna come to fruition ... looks like they're gonna be in the same pool hall soon, and apparently it's open 24H.

Or has that already happened?
